Weekly Prompt for Giles's Record Collection Theme: Velvet Underground

This week's prompt is inspired by a certain scene during Season 4's "The Harsh Light of Day" as seen below...

That's right! This week's prompt is:
The Velvet Underground

Just like last week, we have addition sub-prompts for you, if you are interested. These are all song tracks from Loaded, the specific album tha Oz was holding up. They are:
Who Loves the Sun
Head Held High
I Found a Reason

Remember, there's no time limit for when you need to post your prompt-inspired works. These are merely to get you inspired and get you writing. Drabbles or ficlets of any length are most welcome. Take these prompts wherever you see fit, including any pairings and characters that you please. Just as long as Giles is in the mix somewhere, of course!

As for another bit of housekeeping, as those of you on Tumblr might already know, Otter and I have started a Giles-dedicated blog, which you can find here. It's a good place to get some visual inspiration. To help with the writing we created a few tags for posts associated with the current theme. Here's the one for the Giles's Record Collection theme and this is the one for last week's Cream and/or Clapton prompt and this is the one for the Velvet Underground.

Happy writing and see you next week!

Drabble: Holiday Punch

Title: The Holiday Punch

Author:

[personal profile] littleotter73

Characters: Giles, Buffy

Rating: FRC

Setting: After Giles returns in Bring on the Night in season 7

Word Count: 100
Prompt: Strange Brew

Disclaimer: Just playing in Joss' sandbox.

“Erm, Buffy?” Giles interrupted tentatively as she spoke with the new potentials. “I, uh, don’t mean to alarm you, but there’s a… strange brew… fogging up the buffet table,” he informed her as he pointed to the pale green concoction in the crystal punch bowl. “You did tell Anya this was a Christmas party, yes?”

Buffy rolled her eyes. “You’ve lived in the good ol’ USA for how long and have never had lime sherbet punch?”

She ladled him a cup of the green potion and he recoiled in horror, shaking his head.

“I’ll, uh, pass on the swamp water.”

Weekly Prompt for the Giles's Record Collection Theme

Hello, everyone! First, I would like to say thank you to [personal profile] littleotter73 for the lovely introduction and a great big thank you of my own to [personal profile] il_mio_capitano for her dedication to the community and providing such a welcoming environment for "newbies to the fandom". May Otter and I uphold your shinning legacy!

So, as you hopefully know, this month's theme is Giles's Record Collection. You are free to take that wherever the Muse leads you, but if she's gone silent on you, we'll offer a weekly set of prompts. This week's is:

CREAM and/or ERIC CLAPTON

Our own[personal profile] littleotter73 has created some lovely fanart as a supplement. (I would also like to express my full appreciation for her mad art skills!)

We know from canon that Giles has at least one Cream album in his collection. It stands to reason he'd have some Clapton too. These records don't have to appear in your fic directly. They can just be the inspiration. If that's not enough to get you going, we offer additional prompts of Cream and Eric Clapton song titles:

Strange Brew
My Father's Eyes
It's in the Way That You Use It

As Cap would say, drabbles or ficlets of any length are most welcome. Take these prompts wherever you see fit, including any pairings and characters that you please. Just as long as Giles is in the mix somewhere, of course!

Happy writing and see you next week!

Admin: Announcement

Hi All,

I would like to announce that we have a change in moderators here at Giles Shorts. Due to her real life responsibilities, [personal profile] il_mio_capitano  has decided to step down from her duties as mod. I'd like to thank her for her hard work and dedication over the last several years. Giles Shorts was born from a private comm we hid out in to practice our drabble skills. At her urging, we decided to go public and she took the helm to inspire short fic centered around our favourite Watcher. Thank you, my Captain, for everything.

On a happier note, I am excited to welcome [personal profile] quaggy as my new partner in crime. Though she has been writing fic for over ten years, she is a relative newcomer to the BtVS fandom and has been a regular here at Shorts for over a year. In fact, her first BtVS post ever was in Giles Shorts! And... she is bringing with her some awesome ideas for new themes and prompts. I am totally jazzed, you guys!

So without further ado, from quaggy's genius mind, our September theme is: Giles' Record Collection

Tomorrow there will be a new weekly prompt to help everyone out with the theme. So keep your eyes out for that.

Again, many thanks to il_mio_capitano and welcome, quaggy!

-otter

Return of Giles Shorts!

We're back after our two months break. I hope everyone enjoyed the epic [community profile] summer_of_giles this year. Please remember to drop a few kind words on the entries over there. It can really brighten someone's day.

Shorts is up and running with a monthly theme for August of SUMMER. Anything 'summer' related is welcome and there will be weekly prompts to shake loose ideas. We accept short fic involving Giles here and at happy to take pimping links to longer works as well. The purpose of the comm is to encourage new writing and have a little fun. Pretty much anything goes!

This weeks prompt (which you are welcome to ignore and write your own thing) is: Cooling Down

Emily, Maybe (PG, Gen)

Title: Emily, Maybe.
Author: DHW.
Rated: PG.

---

Old Mrs Ripley picked her way through the Sunday shoppers, hand clutching the brim of her hat, granddaughter in tow. The sun was shining but the wind was fierce, whistling through the gaps and ginnels that branched out from the bustling high street.

“Come on, Emily,” said Mrs Ripley, the grip on her hat tightening. “Don’t dawdle so.”

But the girl, Emily, was not listening. She had just turned sixteen. Her hair was black, her eyes blue, and there was a significant power to her, despite her small stature. One that had not been there the previous year, when she had been fifteen and her dreams did not repeat themselves. In her hand was a business card, small and off-white.

It read:

Dr. Rupert Giles.

Occult Investigations and Supernatural Solutions.

Reasonable Rates.

125B, Nelson Street, Bath. BA1

Enquire Within.

“Show me,” said her Grandmother, peering over her shoulder, aged eyes squinting as she read. “Nonsense. Utter nonsense.”

“But…” replied Emily, staring down at the words.

She could feel the draw of the card, the way it pulled and tugged, willing her to turn left down the alleyway that began with an ‘N’. It almost felt like destiny.

“No ‘buts’, Emily,” said Mrs Ripley as she grabbed her granddaughter’s hand, her gaze stern. “We’re late. Now come along.”

The wind picked up, as if on cue, battering the pair as they made their winding way towards the Church with the tolling bells, trying to change their path. But it did no good. And, as they reached the wrought iron gates of St. John’s, it gave one last gust, succeeding only in plucking the business card from the young girl’s fingers.

“Silly girl,” her Grandmother muttered.

Emily watched as the card blew away, coasting through the streets on the fierce spring wind.

Weekly prompt: Enquire Within

New prompt for this week: Enquire Within. Do with it as you wish...

Quick reminder, this is an 'anything is welcome' sort of place. You are free to use any prompts from whenever or to post something completely fresh. You can post here or merely post a link to your own dw, ff, LJ, ao3, Wordpress, blog, wherever. There really isn't a restriction on wordcount. I'm happy to accept any length if the muse posessed you. The only rule is to have Giles in the mix, but he doesn't have to be the Big Damn Hero or main focus. It's all about writing and sharing here.

Fic: The Accidental Spellcaster

*Waves* Hi everyone! I've missed all of you so much! :)

Author:
feliciacraft
Characters: Xander & Giles
Rated: PG
Length: ~900 words
Beta: The fantastic All4Spike — thank you!
Summary: Rewrite of the scene from BtVS episode 4x17 "Superstar". With a simple incantation, Xander sets Giles's book on fire. Here, the rest of the scene goes a little differently. May contain gratuitous Star Wars references.
Disclaimer: Characters not mine, etc.
Feedback: Always welcome! Pretty please? :)

Too late, Xander slammed the book shut, extinguishing the flames that’d burst into existence upon his incantation. Judging by the acrid smell rising from the book before him, however, the damage had been done. Uh-oh.

“Good Lord!” Giles rushed forward and rescued the ancient text from his hands, tossing his glasses on the coffee table to bury his nose in the damaged spread for a very close inspection....
