Following on from Forever in the last line first line challenge

"Forever?" Giles stammered.

The yellow eyes flashed in amusement. The sharp teeth, which couldn't obscure the essential mischievousness that had once been Ethan, glistened.

"I'm not leaving you behind to rot as a human, Ripper. It will be like old times." He took a predatory step nearer. "Except we will have eternity together."

Giles' retreat hit the wall behind him, causing him to yelp.

"Could we not just start with coffee?" he bleated.

Ethan was close now, his hand slowly caressing Rupert's cheek.

"I think we've gone beyond that, don't you?"

Giles gripped the stake in his pocket.

"I guess."

Last line: The one thought he did not allow in his mind was that it was all too much for him, that he was running away. (24 words!)

The one thought he did not allow in his mind was that it was all too much for him, that he was running away. No. His was a completely rational decision, and so what if he was dressing softly in the middle of the night so as not to wake the figure on the mattress? Staying with Ethan would be running away, plunging further into hedonistic magicks in an attempt to destroy what was left of Rupert Giles would be running away. Those would be cowardly actions, not this.

Nevertheless, he picked up his boots and crept out in shame.

“It’s from my mum.”

“How did she know where to send it, then?”

There was a scramble and smash, the sort of which had become a worry to Rupert recently.

Ethan, as was typical, broke in.

“Look at the precious cookies. Aren’t they so charming? Randall, we all know your mum is a total slag but at least her baking is nice.”

The crumbs dropped down the front of Ethan’s shirt, cascading off the satin like rain. He tossed the remaining chunks around the room with abandon.

“You’re a bastard.”

“The house is still standing. What more would you ask?”

I know the comm is all about drabbles and ficlets, but I know the mod is super cool about fic of any sort, and if you know anything about me, then you know that this is a short fic for me, coming in around 1769 words. By otter standards, it could be classified as a ficlet. ;)

Prompt: "That's correct," he lied.

“That’s correct.”

Gods but Ripper looked smug hitting on that little floozy. That certainly couldn’t be left to stand. “He lied.”

“What?” Taking advantage of the girl’s shock, Ethan stepped in between the two of them, close enough that they’d either have to make him part of their little tête-à-tête or step back. Ethan grinned as Olivia took a step back.

“Our Ripper wouldn’t know the truth if it bit him on the ass.” Counting on Ripper to keep his cool and not break out the violence in front of a bird he was chatting up, Ethan matched deed to words and grabbed a handful of ass, enough to make Ripper jump.

Good. Run Away. He’s mine, Ethan thought as the girl buggered off.

“Ethan,” Ripper growled.

“Yes?” He answered in his sweetest tone, knowing it would goad Ripper that much more.

“Alley. Now.”

Ethan winced as he raised a hand to his bruised cheek. Well, he’d known Ripper hadn’t dragged him into the alley for a good snog. That they could have had in any dark corner. Still, Ripper could always be talked out of a fight. As Ripper raised his fist again, Ethan struck. “Oh come on Ripper. At least kiss it better before you punch me again.”

“Why do I put up with you?” Ripper crashed his lips against Ethan’s.

Because, unlike that little chippie, I know what you need. Because you’re mine.

I went a little further back for this last line: “That must have been hard.” So, the last line "You won." is still in play. Apparently we can go back and use any last line, but I like to fill in the ones that have gotten missed.

Word Count: 177

“That must have been hard to hear, Ripper.” Ethan’s sympathy didn’t quite ring true. “The prodigal son may have returned to the fold, but he’s certainly not been forgiven. No fatted calf for you, my dear.”

Rupert had actually thought he might be accepted until Hawkins, who’d been second best boy until Rupert had skived off, had stared castigating him from across the pub. “Hadn’t you heard? Rupert went off the deep end. Apparently he was quite the degenerate. One can hardly imagine why Travers allowed him back in.” He’d finished in a mock-whisper that was meant to be heard. “Drugs. Satanic rituals.”

“Give it up, Ripper.” Ethan's words brought him back to the present. “This game of your Council’s, it’s not worth playing. Come away. If they can’t appreciate you, they don’t deserve you.”

The Council might have let him back in, but they’d never accept him. Ethan might accept him, but he'd never understand. Rupert may have returned to the fold, but he was more alone than ever. All he had left was his duty.

Lying on the ground gripping his ribs, face swollen with blood streaming into his eyes and out his nose, Rupert knew his situation was dire. He shouldn’t have been out without weapons, but he’d been living on the streets and had hawked most of his belongings including his grandmother’s sword.

Desperation set in as the demons descended. Without hesitation, Rupert muttered something in Latin, falling back on the pavement as a shockwave tore the beasts apart.

A figure emerged from the shadows. “Quite a talent you’ve got, mate. Name’s Ethan.”

“Rupert,” he gasped, feeling lightheaded.

“Oh, I think Ripper’s better.”

Title: And If My Love Had Never Let Me Go
Prompt: Run For Your Life
Rating: PG
Summary: Trekker wrote a series called In Another Life where Rupert went back to the Council but never broke up with Ethan. In the chapter The Dark Age, Postscript, Ethan is drawn into a universe where his and Rupert's relationship had ended. It was such a fascinating idea I couldn't help but play with it. This is a remix of that chapter.
Note: The story shifts between the two verses but headers are included to orient the reader.
Note: This is the fourth chapter, the link on the title takes you to the whole story on AO3.

Ethan found himself running, not for his own life, but for Rupert's. )
