Author: littleotter73
Characters: Giles/Buffy

“Giles, at this point, nothing new about you shocks me anymore.” Buffy was remarkably calm about their current situation. “Honestly, I’ve seen it all.”

“I highly doubt it,” he muttered, doing his best to hide behind the curtain, the blush rising up his naked chest to his cheeks.

Water streaming from her hair and clothes, she asked, “How did this happen anyway?”

“I-”

Wide eyes met his. “Did you, uh, make some sort of wish?”

Caught out, he frustratingly exclaimed, “Oh, bloody hell!”

“You wished for me to to join you in the shower???”

Apparently he could shock her still.

It didn’t matter how much she begged, he wasn’t going to give in. No amount of bargaining, reasoning, whining, or even threatening bodily harm was going to prevent him from staying in. If she wanted to go out clubbing with the gang, that was fine by him, but there was a fire in the hearth, a mystery novel by the arm of his chair, and he’d just made up an Irish coffee.

But when Buffy came down the stairs in that little black dress, stilettos, and the bright red lipstick that accentuated her pout, he knew his plans were doomed.

Title: It Doesn’t All Suck
Author: littleotter73
Character: Buffy, Giles
Rating: G
Word Count: 100

Maybe it wasn’t so bad being the Slayer after all. The healing effects were tres cool. Kicking demon ass was definitely up there as an aggression therapy tool… and bonus: all evil big bads thwarted resulted in (mostly) awesome after parties. Of course, there were major downsides to slaying: vamp dust, demon goo, and… death.

But looking across the room, Buffy finally understood what made it all worth while, the quiet support and approval of her Watcher. Giles flashed her that look of immense pride and respect and she answered it with a smile.

Destiny had dealt her a solid.

Title: The Conflict Within

Author: littleotter73

Characters: Giles, with mentions of Willow and Buffy

Rating: FRC

Word Count: 100

Setting: Season 6, Flooded

He hated it when she was right. Despite his reservations, his fears, his loathing at the very idea of having Buffy brought back to them through dangerous, primal magicks, Giles couldn’t help the indescribable joy of having his Slayer back. But, he was angry. Angry at Willow for having done so. He hated her smug look, her threats, her self-entitlement, her demand for his gratitude.

But something was off with Buffy. He hoped it had nothing to do with the spell, because if it did, he couldn’t bear the consequences of his actions.

Yet...

He couldn’t help but feel grateful.

Prompt: You have witchcraft in your lips.

It had been a hard fought battle, but the Scooby Gang stood victorious and surveyed the wreckage before them.

“Ugh! It’s not gonna dissolve, is it?” Xander whined, supporting an exhausted Willow.

“I am too tired for burial duty,” Buffy whinged. “But we've gotta do something or it will start to stink.”

Catching his breath, Giles viewed the giant wyrm with disgust before his eyes flashed bright green and the beast burst into flame.

“My hero!” Buffy declared, throwing her arms around him and surprising him with a kiss. “Did anyone tell you you have witchcraft in your lips, Giles?”

Title: This Above All
Author: littleotter73
Characters: Giles, Buffy, Riley
Setting: Early S5
Word Count: 100

In that deep, dark place he held in check within him, Giles hated the young Initiative soldier. Riley was a distraction at best - sulking when he didn't beat the Slayer in training, or match her kill ratio in battle, or hold her full attention. His fragile masculinity unwilling to accept her as she is.

Worse yet, Buffy tried compromising her nature to appease him.

Unable to watch the drama unfold any longer, Giles took her aside. "You are not a trophy for some insecure soldier from Iowa. You are the Slayer, Buffy, remember that. To thine own self be true."

"A Slayer deserves a night off now and then," Buffy argued, her lips turned down in a little pout.

Giles took an interest in the book he carried, determined to resist the emotional blackmail tactic. "I agree," he began. "However, this is the third night in a row you have asked to have off and the vampires are not going to stake themselves."

"But those were exam related... ok, so last night was a date - a study date - but Giles, we're talking Cibo Matto!"

Perplexed, he made the mistake of looking at her. Victory was hers. He'd lost his resolve.

"Giles, what have you done?" he asked himself miserably as the wheels lifted off the ground. Every fiber in his body cried out that it was a mistake, leaving her so soon after finding out she'd been ripped from heaven... but then, part of him had known she'd been there all along. He'd just been waiting for her to confide in him.

Perhaps that was where he'd gone wrong.

It seemed every decision he'd made since returning to the States had been the wrong one. But he couldn't sit around and wait any longer. He wasn't the man she wanted.

Eggnog.

Giles eyed the punch bowl with something akin to the way he viewed the brews he’d kept in the Magic Box - with suspicion and contempt. It wasn’t necessarily the raw eggs that made his head swim - though he had his doubts - it was the sheer amounts of sugar and brandy he’d watched Buffy add to the mixture.

“Come on, G,” Xander slurred, clapping his hand on Giles’ shoulder. “You haven’t lived until you’ve had some of the Summers’ secret family nog. Try some.”

“No, no, I think not,” he replied quickly. “Diabetes and alcoholism… I’d sooner die a fyarl.”

Giles gathered the post before crossing the threshold and tossed his keys onto the side table. Closing the door behind him, he rifled through the stack of papers, lamenting the fact that he hadn’t heard from his globetrotting Slayer yet. He’d already received greetings from the rest of the gang.

As he set down the bundle, he noticed a muted glow from the lounge and, not remembering having left a light on that morning, cautiously made his way to investigate.

Finding Buffy standing before a newly decorated tree, a smile spread across his lips.

“Merry Christmas, Giles,” she said softly.

With all the excitement of decorating for Christmas, Willow solemnly pulled out the Menorah her parents had given her upon entering college. They’d expected her to uphold her Jewish traditions after moving in separate directions. Over the intervening years, Willow had set them aside, preferring to celebrate the winter solstice.

But something was different this year - after the First.

Picking up the shamash, she lit the first candle.

Her friends noticed her methodical movements and moved to join her. Buffy and Xander took her hands and she raised her voice to chant with Giles as he began the Hanerot Halalu.

A/N: Sorry this is a day late. I was busy volunteering with my kids' play yesterday - closing night and whatnot.

It never ceased to amaze him, the generosity of his Slayer. Despite the complexities of planning and the sheer volume of sweets and treats acquired, she was determined to follow through with the Summers family tradition of celebrating St Nicholas Day - only on a grand scale in the Slayer dorm.

“Dawn and I looked forward to this every year,” Buffy explained, smiling and placing two goody filled shoes in front of a door. “It’s the little things.”

“It’s important to carry traditions forward,” Giles agreed, shifting the large sack he carried. “Although next time, find someone else wear the robes.”

“And checking it twice,” she quipped. “I can’t help but feel I am missing somebody… or somebodies.”

Taking the paper from her, Giles sat down on the corner of her desk and glanced over it. “Ah, you’ve missed Helen…” he said and, picking up her pen, struck out the name of another girl. “Last night, after patrol, Erin-“

“No!”

Startled, Giles looked up to see the the panic in Buffy’s eyes. “No! Nothing like that! Erin’s just gone home for the holidays.”

He was sure he was nine the last time he took a sleigh ride through the country, drinking hot chocolate and burrowing into the hay beneath a blanket to stave off the biting cold whilst singing Christmas carols with his friends into the night.

Now he was forty-nine, safely ensconced beneath the duvet with his Slayer in his arms on clear winter night, sipping a hot toddy from his flask and listening to the muted clopping of horse hooves on tamped down snow whilst sillily renaming the constellations in the sky, eternally thankful for the peace he’d finally found.

Giles entered the library cursing that sadistic little tyrant Synder and his penchant for late afternoon staff meetings… and just before the winter holidays. Because of the lateness of the hour, he had missed the gang and their little Christmas party.

Tossing his jacket over the back of a chair, he noticed the perfect gingerbread model of the library sitting on the worktable, complete with miniature Slayerettes researching around the table while the two figures representing Buffy and himself were training off to the side.

And beneath them, written in white icing:

Merry Christmas, Giles!

He smiled at their sentimentality.

Giles gazed at the huge, imposing edifice before him, dreading having to fight his way through the throng of humanity and engage in battle, trying to find presents for loved ones. His own little family had grown over the years, and he’d spent months pondering the right gift for each member. Glancing quickly over his list, he felt his trepidation rise.

Perhaps he should’ve taken Willow’s suggestion and tried online shopping.

He physically blanched at that thought.

“Come on, Giles!” he urged, rallying himself.

He battled monsters nightly…  had survived several apocalypses.

At least the mall had a tea shop.

A/N: This is an epilogue for the fic I wrote and posted on shorts previously called True to One's Nature.

Rupert finished the last of his beer, willing the horrifying images from his mind. It was the stuff of nightmares, his reality. He'd been lost in a terrified haze until the bartender bellowed last call. Pushing away from the bar, he went to find the gents and found a payphone instead, debating with himself until he finally made a decision.

His hands trembled with fear when he heard the groggy, familiar voice come over the line. Taking a deep breath to steady himself, he pushed the coin in and said, "Hello, Dad? Yeah... it's me. I want to come home."

He sat on the bench covered in mud, surrounded by congratulatory teammates, blood streaming from the cut above his nose, and the shadow of two black eyes emerging beneath the skin, donning a predatory grin. The team doctor would need to set his nose later.

The headmaster and dean shook hands in the stands.

“Who knew young Giles had it in him?”

“I daresay he’s finally found an outlet for that quiet rage he harbours.”

“As long as he channels it on the rugby pitch.”

“Agreed. Such newfound confidence could prove dangerous.”

Silence fell as victory suddenly tasted less sweet.
