Tradition. Family. Destiny. Presented far too young, they’d chafed against him until he ran and spiraled out of control. After Randall, his friends had dispersed like rats in a rainstorm and he’d holed up alone in a squat. Then he’d seen the obituary in a day old newspaper.
Sitting in the solicitor’s office with his mum and sister, his old suit hanging oddly on his now too skinny frame, he was presented with the signet ring - the Giles crest and motto in relief on onyx: Pensez a moi.
He finally understood his father’s lessons. You can’t outrun who you are.
