The Halloween season is the time for recs! Fics, vids, graphics, anything and everything fandom has produced in all the Whedon fandoms will be on offer at buffyversetop5. We'll be reopening on October 20 at midnight UTC (what time is that for me?) and running through midnight November 2.

A/N: I meant to get this out yesterday evening, but I fell asleep before 10pm, which is a Christmas Miracle for me. Anyway, Merry Christmas!

She let out a contented sigh and looked around her: Dawn and her fiancé, Willow and her partner, and Xander with his wife and newborn. Every year they came together in the same place to celebrate Christmas, as it should be.

With a soft smile, she reached out and took Giles' hand in hers. He'd been the one who stayed, been with her through it all, sharing the responsibility of foraging a new path and providing support for Slayers everywhere.

This was the promise she'd looked forward to when she'd gazed across the Sunnydale crater all those years ago.

Family.

“I’m sure they will! I’ve never even made them before, so my bar is pretty low anyway,” said Willow reassuringly.

“I’m not sure I want to eat something with the word ‘mince’ in it,” complained Xander.

“Yeah, the only mincemeat I want to make is out of a demon,” Dawn chimed in.

Buffy looked around at her wacky, wonderful little family, arguing about pie. She let out a contented sigh.

Travers turned towards the girl. "Yes," he admitted. "Because he failed."

"Giles is the best Watcher ever and if you didn't hide away in stuff old England, you would know that!"

"Good day, Miss Summers."

"They aren't afraid of you," she declared, chin raised.

The banner had been painted hastily but with no less sincerity. Willow and Xander were holding it outside of Giles’ flat and beaming.

The other pair had both been in the hospital after a particularly nasty confrontation with a demon of unknown origin. All they knew so far was that it had a lot of teeth. A LOT. Buffy had healed more quickly, of course, but had chosen to stay in the hospital to protect Giles in case the demon came back for him...or so she claimed. Either way, Giles had appreciated the company.

Xander groans because, well, he's Xander and it's his thing, but underneath he is happy to see the couple happy.

"Well, you know... two blissful, vamp-free weeks in Fiji with my sister..." Dawn teases.

"Don't need the visual, Dawn!" Xander whines, making fake retching sounds.

As the newlyweds open the door, the Scoobies grab the sign and shout, "Welcome home, Buffy and Giles!"

Giles doesn’t laugh though. Xander is still elbowing the Watcher’s side and chuckling at his own joke about S’s’ask demons.

“It’s funny, y’see, because if you reverse the letters...” Giles raises an eyebrow. “Oh, right, I forgot they don’t have humor in Watcherland.”

“You mean England?”

“Exactly.”

Giles sniffs. “We do have humor, it’s just less sophomoric.”

“So tell me a joke!”

Giles mouth quirks up. “Well, I do know a rather funny one about an Incubus and a vengeance demon…no offense, Anya.”

“None taken - vengeance demons are known for their jocular nature.”

“Giles!” shouts Buffy. “No time! They’re here!”

“British huh? We get a lot of overseas visitors. Don’t forget to see the gift shop. They got prints and tee-shirts, money clips, you name it. Shame to come all this way without a souvenir for the folks back home.”

“How did it happen?” Another tourist asks.

“A geological phenomenon caused this crater. Wiped out the whole town of Sunnydale. Mind you, some say it was the work of the Devil.” The guide winks and the party laughs. Giles doesn’t laugh though.

Willow put her arm around her. "I am sure she wants to come, Buff, but you know... it's complicated," she explained, taking Buffy's hand in hers. "Maybe if you called him, gave him a little pout, he'll come running like old times. Watcher's Pet and all?"

"I dunno, Wil, we're not those people anymore." She stared out the window, taking in the Roman sunset. "Not for years."

Buffy would kill him if she ever found out. Giles knew that for certain as he tidied his apartment frantically. She was due in five minutes and he was still hung over. His records were either on the floor or in the wrong sleeves. There were spillages, bottles, cigarettes ends, and burns on his rugs. An alarming smell of weed too. He didn’t remember buying that, but then he didn’t remember buying kahlua either.

Just as he grabbed some underwear off his turntable, Buffy opened his door.

“My God, Giles. What happened here last night?”

“Burglars?” He wasn’t very convincing.

He had half a mind to fly back just to give Buffy a stern lecture on fiscal responsibility. The other half of his mind wanted to cradle her in his arms and tell her that he’d shoulder all her burdens forever. Instead, he picked up the phone again and dialed his banker.

“Yes, another transfer please. UC Sunnydale.”

Buffy would kill him if she ever found out.

Giles' hackles went up. "Ethan," he growled, turning around slowly as to not telegraph his nerves. While Ethan could never best him in a physical fight, he could never best Ethan in magicks, and currently, he didn't have the advantage. "What brings you back to Sunnydale?"

Ethan shrugged. "Came to see a Watcher about a Slayer."

"She won't talk to you," Giles stated, crossing his arms over his chest.

At that moment two demons jumped him from behind, beating him until he fell unconscious.

"Oh, Ripper," Ethan gloated, watching the demons pick Giles up. "I am sure she will."

Wesley pulled at his sleeve. “I really think we should be moving along now. Our business is concluded. And it does have rather a lot of teeth.”

“No, there’s something fishy about this.” Giles stepped through the smoke and approached the demon. “It’s made of bloody rubber!” He pulled at the head and cloak and the creature collapsed to reveal its puppet master.

“Spike,” Giles said angrily.

The vampire gave a nervous grin. “Surprise!”

Giles and Spike looked over the dingy hotel room. A pipe had burst in Giles’ apartment and the two were forced out while it was being repaired. And, unfortunately for Giles, no one else wanted to take Spike for the weekend.

“Well, I’m not sleeping in the bathtub again.”

“Well I have a backache.”

“So sleep on the floor, s’posed to be good for it!”

Giles glared, and Spike relented. Giles settled in on the bed, finding it made his back pain worse.

Spike was already making himself cozy on the floor. “No take backsies!”

So leave it to the witch to intervene, locking them up together until they made up.

Giles furiously jiggled the door handle.

"You're the magic man," Buffy taunted. "Magic us out!"

"I've already tried," he growled. "She's too clever by half!"

After scanning their makeshift prison, their eyes met in horror.

It's been far too long since we've played First Line Last Drabbles. So let's countdown to Christmas and cheer what has been an extraordinary year.

Basic rules:
1. Drabbles are 100 words (although cheating is slightly allowed - especially by me)
2. The first line of a drabble must begin with the last line of a previous drabble
3. Otherwise no continuity is expected
3. Must involve Giles however slightly because, hey, we are Giles_shorts

Right then. I shall begin

Waving her crossbow, Buffy backed the two versions of Giles against the wall.

“It’s me,” Giles One said. “The other one is the demon.”

“Rubbish,” Giles Two pleaded. “It scanned my memories; don’t believe a word it says.”

Giles One removed his glasses. “Then look into my eyes. Remember how I was the only one who could look at you this way?”

Buffy smiled then blasted a bolt straight through his head. Giles One collapsed into green goo.

Real Giles released his breath. “Well, that could’ve gone badly wrong. What gave him away?”

“He looked too smug.”

“Good to know.”

“Where is he now?”

“The infirmary, exhausted, malnourished, and high on magicks and drugs.”

Sir John shook his head in dismay. “In matters such as these, our only recourse is expulsion.”

“And here lies the irony of our dilemma, the fates called him tonight. His Slayer was born.”

Justification: I’ve ummed and ahhed over the length of this. I could probably rewrite it to get it down to 100, but ultimately, soddit, I like it how it is. So there :p

“I’ll handle this. Everyone stay back,” Buffy insisted, gripping the bronze sword as she approached the hissing, snarling demon that had once been mild-mannered Chad Williams. It had been cruel fate that had caused him to be infected and transformed, and now there was nothing that could be done for him.

“Don’t let him touch you, Buffy!” Willow implored.

“No intention,” Buffy grunted, as she hacked and parried the demon’s attack. It lunged, and she leapt aside as it barrelled into her friends. “Oh no you don’t,” she said and slashed her weapon against the demon’s throat.

“Is everyone OK?”

“Ah,” said Giles, looking at his wounded hand. “We have a bit of a problem.”

“You’re very handsome, aren’t you?” Buffy cooed as she dropped to her knees in front of the object of her affection. Reaching out, she picked up the little bundle and gently petted the soft, fuzzy head and velvety ears. “Are you mommy’s boy?”

Around her several other puppies rumbled and tumbled about, but she’d only had eyes the one who’d sat and watched patiently as his siblings played before taking advantage of an opportunity to pounce on his pack.

“Are you sure, Buffy?” Giles asked.

Snuggling the pup to her chest, she smiled. “Oh yes. He reminds me of you.”

“Do shut up, Xander, your running commentary is beginning to sound like my eulogy,” Giles instructed as they wandered down the alley towards the last place Buffy’s lizard demon had been spotted.

Undeterred, Xander continued, “He’s a man who brews tea to perfection and then forgets its there all while solving the most complex supernatural prophecies known to man and demon alike.”

“He’s SuperWatcher!”
