He knows the jut of her chin and the movements of her bottom lip well. He recognizes the spark he sees in her green eyes as she defies him for once, not too long ago, he wore the same look. He persists as vehemently as she does, refusing her the luxuries even on a sunny, Summer afternoon of lazing about with her friends. He won't let her rest. He pushes her every day and night, even when he himself would rather be at home with a good record, engrossing read, and a bottle of Scotch.

He persists because he sees himself in her and, unlike the Watchers who should have taken a firmer hand in his youth, he refuses to let the deaths that happened because of his own defiance happen again, not just to those who would pay the final cost but to the one who would pay the highest cost of all, to the savior who would much rather be catching a wave or a tan than saving lives. She says he doesn't understand -- it's her favorite line of all --, but he understands more than she'll ever know. "Again, Buffy," he instructs sternly and never once backs down.
