Title: Gone

Author:

[personal profile] littleotter73

Character: Buffy (with mention of Giles)

Summary/Setting: Buffy stops by Giles’ apartment before heading to The Bronze at the end of Tabula Rasa

Rating: FRT

Word Count: 100

Prompts: Books and Tea

Disclaimer: Just playing in Joss’ sandbox.

He hadn’t lived there since the night she’d died, having first moved into her house to take care of Dawn, then back to England, and then to her couch, but she suddenly found herself at Giles’ apartment, staring at the ‘For Lease’ sign on the door.

It had been her haven, a place she’d felt welcome and cared for.

Letting herself in, she found it empty. Not one reminder that he’d lived there remained: no lingering smell of tea, not one book left behind. Giles was gone.

Her anger flared. Fuck this. She’d find welcome and refuge at The Bronze.

There's a fair amount of evidence in canon for this week's prompt:
HORSEPOWER!!!
Or horse power, if you prefer!

Remember, there's no time limit for when you need to post your prompt-inspired works. We welcome prompts from previous themes and prompts at any time. Drabbles or ficlets of any length are most welcome. Go wherever the muse takes you, including any pairings and characters that you please, just as long as Giles somehow involved.

Don't forget, Giles's Halloween Fanfic Extravaganza is just two weeks away on the October 31st!!
Happy writing!!

Title: No Refuge
Author: foreverbooks
Setting: Pre-Series
Prompt: His Favorite Things: Books
Word Count: 100
Disclaimer: Not mine, just having a little fun with them

For as long as Giles could remember, books had fed his curiosity and sense of adventure. But now, after Eyghon, they had become so much more - a refuge - A way to forget for a moment the disappointment on his parents' faces; an excuse to avoid his fellow Watchers-in-training, with their open contempt and barely contained morbid curiosity. A way to drown out the constant loop of Randall's final, horrific moments.

The one thing his books couldn't give him was relief from the never ending guilt. Not even they could provide him with a way to escape from himself

Our new weekly prompt is another obvious Giles love:
TEA!!
Thanks goes again to [personal profile] littleotter73  for the lovely compilation image.

For those of you on Tumblr (or those who just like to lurk) we have a couple of tags for visual inspiration. The tag for His Favorite Things can be found here and the tag specifically for Tea can be found here. (Check out the tag for Books too! Lots of great visual inspiration there!)

Drabbles or ficlets of any length are most welcome. Go wherever the muse takes you, including any pairings and characters that you please, just as long as Giles somehow involved.

And don't forget Giles's Halloween Fanfic Extravaganza on the October 31st!!

In honor of Giles's favorite American holiday, we are pleased to announce Giles Shorts' very first...
Giles's Halloween Fanfic Extravaganza!!!

On October 31st, for one day only, we are lifting our (admittedly lax) word restriction to host Halloween-related BtVS fics of all lengths. They can be creepy. They can funny. They just have to be in keeping in the spirit of Halloween. Bonfire Night and Mischief Night fics are also welcome as well. (Giles is British, after all!)

Chose any characters or time period that you like. Pre-series, post-series, episode-related, canon-divergent, comic-verse, completely AU, anything goes! (Just remember Halloween wasn't really a thing in the UK until recently and it's still not celebrated to the same extent it is stateside.) We do ask that works that are longer than 100 words at least feature a cameo from Giles. And yes, that means that 100-word drabbles featuring any Buffyverse characters with or without Giles are welcome.

For those of you who are familiar with the [community profile] summer_of_giles Free Day, it works something like that. No need to sign up, just post whatever work that you have, whenever you are ready. (For those of you that do not have DW accounts and would like to participate, please contact us at giles.shorts@gmail.com).

Just remember you only have until 11:59pm Pacific Standard Time October 31, 2017 before the magic ends and we go back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Giles's Record Collection Prompt: "I Found a Reason" (Velvet Underground)
Notes: Crossed posted on my journal and over here on AO3.

It wasn’t easy returning to the Council fold. The snide remarks. The smug looks. Not to mention, the outright hostility.

“Honestly, right now, the only thing keeping me going is pure obstinacy. That and not wanting to disappoint Gran,” he confessed to his parents on a visit home.

“There are worse reasons, Rupert,” his mother said gently.

“Not disappointing my mother is a bloody good reason, if you ask me,” his father interjected. His wife shot him a glare.

“If I might continue?” she asked.

“Yes, dear. Sorry,” her husband replied, contritely, as her son bit back a grin. His mum and gran were the only people he knew who could keep his dad in line.

“Rupert, my darling, don’t lose heart,” his mother continued, taking his hand. “Remember that someday you are going to find not just reasons to keep going, but the reason that will make it all worth it. I promise you will.”

“Thanks, Mum.” The thought did help. (Though he wouldn’t truly understand what she meant until the day he’d met Buffy Summers, someone beyond his current ability to imagine.) “I just wish it’d happen soon.”

“Well, in the meantime, there’s always blackmail,” his father offered.

Giles's Record Collection Prompt: "Wish You Were Here" (Pink Floyd)
Notes: Crossed posted on my journal and over here on AO3. Set post-series. Obviously, the song playing was "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd.

It was just another night out at the pub. Nothing special. The usual bunch Watchers and Senior Slayers unwinding, having a drink and a chat. Tonight, at least for the moment, it wasn’t so loud that you couldn’t hear the music playing in the background.

Giles froze at the opening bars, which caught Buffy’s attention from the corner of her eye. She watched as he quietly made his way over to a nearby sofa and sat down. Pulled into himself.

She knew the song too. Knew he must be thinking of someone that he had lost and, God, he had lost so many people along the way. He could be thinking about anyone, honestly. But it didn’t matter if it was somebody she had never met. She wasn’t going to leave him alone with his pain.

She slipped down next to him and rested her head on his shoulder. Instantly, his arm came around her, pulling her close, and he planted a fervent kiss on her head. Blinking back tears, she wrapped her arms around him and held back just as tightly.

They sat like that long after the song ended, as the party continued to swirl around them unaware.

Title: Poles Apart

Author: littleotter73

Character: Giles

Setting: Season 6, before Two to Go

Rating: FRC
Prompt: Pink Floyd - Poles Apart

Word Count: 100

Disclaimer: Just playing in Joss’ sandbox

Staring at the phone, Giles warred with himself whether he should ring her again. It had been six months and he’d never connected with her. He’d spoken with Dawn, Tara, and Willow, and of course, he’d kept in touch with Anya about the Magic Box - and that meant that he’d also spoken with Xander.

But never with Buffy. She wouldn’t take his calls.

Hell hath no fury…

Now the situation was dire: an apocalypse was imminent and he needed to warn her of the threat Willow posed to the world.

How could he do that when they were poles apart?

“Hey, you!”

She sat down next to him, but he rose stiffly to leave. The tentative forgiveness granted before going into battle now a distant memory in the face of an uncertain future.

“Stay! … Please.”

He hesitantly sat back down and she took his hand in hers.

“I hate this distance between us.”

Confusion clouded his face when she laced their fingers together.

“For what it’s worth, I’m sorry.”

His eyes met hers. “Oh, Buffy, me too.”

“I know we can’t go back.”

Squeezing her hand, his heart pounded in his chest. “No,” he agreed. “But… we could start anew.”

Giles's Record Collection Prompt: "My Father's Eyes" (Eric Clapton)
Notes: Post Season 5. Just when, I'll leave up to you

My father had the kindest eyes. Even at his most serious, you could always see the laughter lurking behind them.

After his Slayer’s death, I know he tried to be just as good of a father and husband as he was before. I never doubted that he was proud of me and it was obvious that he adored my mother. But his eyes were never the same. There was a sorrow in them that never quite went away.

I now think about that every morning when I look in the mirror and my father’s weary eyes stare back at me.

Welcome to our last week for the Giles's Record Collection monthly theme. As you might have guessed, we've been picking our weekly prompts based on actual bands that Giles either mentioned or had in his record collection. So, how could we possibly end this month's theme without the weekly prompt of:

PINK FLOYD

In honor of this week's theme, [personal profile] littleotter73  has again made us some lovely fanart! More than one! You can find all her pretty art from this month's theme over here. Go tell her how much you like them!

The sub-prompts are again all Pink Floyd song titles, but you can bend and twist them anyway you want. Or use any other Pink Floyd songs or lyrics as inspiration.

"Comfortably Numb"
"Another Brick in the Wall "
"Wish You Were Here"

Remember, there's no time limit for when you need to post your prompt-inspired works. These are merely to get you inspired and get you writing. Drabbles or ficlets of any length are most welcome. Take these prompts wherever you see fit, including any pairings and characters that you please, just as long as Giles somehow involved.

Happy writing and see you next week!

Character: Giles

Setting: Pre-Series

Prompt: Velvet Underground - Head Held High

Word Count: 100

Disclaimer: Just playing in Joss’ sandbox

He sat in the chair, hands cuffed, staring at his boots, scuffed and covered in demon ichor - all that was left of Randall after the failed exorcism - facing a murder charge. The police had raided the abandoned building just in time to witness him beheading an Eyghon possessed Randall. The rest had scattered, but weakened by magicks, he’d been caught.

“Let him go. His story checks out. An 8mm film camera was found on the scene, but no body. Just film students having a lark.”

Ripper Giles walked out of the station, but not exactly with his head held high.

Title: Sweet Gen

Author: Will_conqueror1

Pairing: Giles/OFC
Summary: Oz triggers a memory from Giles’ past, and of a woman he once thought he’d spend his life with.
Timeline: Season 4 “The Harsh Light of Day”, when Oz is looking through Giles’ record collection.
Word Count: 581
Author’s Note: This takes place in my Chronicles of Ripper series, which I’ve often said I try very hard to keep canon compliant. However, you don’t need to read the rest of the series for this short story to make sense.
Author's Note 2: I was very excited about this prompt because The Velvet Underground is one of my favorite bands and I love that he has Loaded in his collection. The song this fic was inspired by is "Sweet Jane" by The Velvet Underground. Click here for a listen.

This week's prompt is inspired by a certain scene during Season 4's "The Harsh Light of Day" as seen below...

That's right! This week's prompt is:
The Velvet Underground

Just like last week, we have addition sub-prompts for you, if you are interested. These are all song tracks from Loaded, the specific album tha Oz was holding up. They are:
Who Loves the Sun
Head Held High
I Found a Reason

Remember, there's no time limit for when you need to post your prompt-inspired works. These are merely to get you inspired and get you writing. Drabbles or ficlets of any length are most welcome. Take these prompts wherever you see fit, including any pairings and characters that you please. Just as long as Giles is in the mix somewhere, of course!

As for another bit of housekeeping, as those of you on Tumblr might already know, Otter and I have started a Giles-dedicated blog, which you can find here. It's a good place to get some visual inspiration. To help with the writing we created a few tags for posts associated with the current theme. Here's the one for the Giles's Record Collection theme and this is the one for last week's Cream and/or Clapton prompt and this is the one for the Velvet Underground.

Happy writing and see you next week!

Setting: After Giles returns in Bring on the Night in season 7

Word Count: 100
Prompt: Strange Brew

Disclaimer: Just playing in Joss' sandbox.

“Erm, Buffy?” Giles interrupted tentatively as she spoke with the new potentials. “I, uh, don’t mean to alarm you, but there’s a… strange brew… fogging up the buffet table,” he informed her as he pointed to the pale green concoction in the crystal punch bowl. “You did tell Anya this was a Christmas party, yes?”

Buffy rolled her eyes. “You’ve lived in the good ol’ USA for how long and have never had lime sherbet punch?”

She ladled him a cup of the green potion and he recoiled in horror, shaking his head.

“I’ll, uh, pass on the swamp water.”

Hello, everyone! First, I would like to say thank you to [personal profile] littleotter73 for the lovely introduction and a great big thank you of my own to [personal profile] il_mio_capitano for her dedication to the community and providing such a welcoming environment for "newbies to the fandom". May Otter and I uphold your shinning legacy!

So, as you hopefully know, this month's theme is Giles's Record Collection. You are free to take that wherever the Muse leads you, but if she's gone silent on you, we'll offer a weekly set of prompts. This week's is:

CREAM and/or ERIC CLAPTON

Our own[personal profile] littleotter73 has created some lovely fanart as a supplement. (I would also like to express my full appreciation for her mad art skills!)

We know from canon that Giles has at least one Cream album in his collection. It stands to reason he'd have some Clapton too. These records don't have to appear in your fic directly. They can just be the inspiration. If that's not enough to get you going, we offer additional prompts of Cream and Eric Clapton song titles:

Strange Brew
My Father's Eyes
It's in the Way That You Use It

As Cap would say, drabbles or ficlets of any length are most welcome. Take these prompts wherever you see fit, including any pairings and characters that you please. Just as long as Giles is in the mix somewhere, of course!

Happy writing and see you next week!

Hi All,

I would like to announce that we have a change in moderators here at Giles Shorts. Due to her real life responsibilities, [personal profile] il_mio_capitano  has decided to step down from her duties as mod. I'd like to thank her for her hard work and dedication over the last several years. Giles Shorts was born from a private comm we hid out in to practice our drabble skills. At her urging, we decided to go public and she took the helm to inspire short fic centered around our favourite Watcher. Thank you, my Captain, for everything.

On a happier note, I am excited to welcome [personal profile] quaggy as my new partner in crime. Though she has been writing fic for over ten years, she is a relative newcomer to the BtVS fandom and has been a regular here at Shorts for over a year. In fact, her first BtVS post ever was in Giles Shorts! And... she is bringing with her some awesome ideas for new themes and prompts. I am totally jazzed, you guys!

So without further ado, from quaggy's genius mind, our September theme is: Giles' Record Collection

Tomorrow there will be a new weekly prompt to help everyone out with the theme. So keep your eyes out for that.

Again, many thanks to il_mio_capitano and welcome, quaggy!

-otter
