“You’re very pleased with yourself, aren’t you?” As if she needed to ask. The huge smile on his face proved it.

Giles didn’t say a word but continued to regard her with a satisfied smile. They had been together for a few years and the fact that he could still shock her he considered quite the feat.

“What I don’t understand is why didn’t you say anything before now?”

“Would you have believed me if I had?” His smile widened as he moved closer. “Besides, I was always much better at show than tell.”

“Your friends, no matter how well intentioned did you a disservice.” Before she could ask Giles continued. “They pulled you out of Heaven, brought you back and assumed you would fit into your old life as if you had never been gone.”

Tears glistened in Buffy eyes as he spoke.

“I can’t bear to watch you try any longer. It’s too painful. You need a break. Come with me?” Giles repeated and held out his hand. “Let me help you.”

Without a word she slipped her hand in his.

“You’ll just have to figure this one out on your own, Buffy.”

Buffy wanted to stomp her foot. “Why won’t you help me?”

“Let’s say I pick the purple one, what would...” Before he could finish speaking, Buffy quickly interrupted.

“What’s wrong with the red one?”

His smile widened. “I rest my case.”

Buffy nodded. "Uh huh."

"But your clothes aren't..." At the look on Buffy's face Giles stopped talking.

"Get with the times, Giles." Buffy grabbed her stake from the top of the desk. "Just because I'm the Slayer doesn't mean I can't look good while I'm slaying."

His eyes narrowed as a thought occurred. “Is Angel meeting you there?”

She tried to shrug nonchalantly. “He might.”

A deep sigh escaped him.

He should have known.

“Giles, you have got to come quick. You are not going to believe this!”

Bloody hell! “Weapons?”

Xander nodded his head and followed Giles to the weapons locker. “Big ones.”

When was he going to learn to stop tempting fate?

Buffy held up her hand to stop him. “I’m the Slayer and I don’t have a choice.” Her voice was small as she whispered, “I wish I did.”

“I wish that I could...” Giles’ voice trailed off into nothingness. No matter how much he might wish otherwise his Slayer was going to die tonight and there was nothing he could do to stop it.

After all, it was her destiny.

“Really?” Disbelief colored Giles’ voice. “You do understand I’m asking you out on a... on a date?”

A slow grin began to spread across Buffy’s face. “Uh huh.”

Giles’ couldn’t stop smiling as he slid his arms around her waist and pulled her close against his body. “And you said yes.”

She cupped his cheek. “Yes. I did.”

"It’s just a little something I wanted to try.” Willow plucked the oddly shaped bottle out of Giles’ hand and slid it back inside of her bag.

A look of horror crossed his face as he interrupted. “It’s not a love potion, is it?”

Willow’s red hair bounced around her shoulders as she shook her head. “How could you even...?

Giles felt foolish. He should’ve known better. Without a word he patted her on the shoulder and left the room.

She watched him leave with a wicked smile on her face.
