 Hello Everyone!

We are back! I hope you all enjoyed the fun over at [community profile] summer_of_giles . If you haven't, please go check out the excellent offerings of those who contributed to Giles' amazing summer. Now it is our turn to celebrate Giles in short fic. For those of you who may be new, the way we do this is by having monthly themes and weekly prompts reflecting that theme to inspire.

This month's them will be fairly obvious:

Autumn/Fall

And this week's theme will be:

Back to School

Have fun!

Welcome to April! This month's theme will be:

Tropes

In order to allow you to fulfill a trope prompt, we are accepting drabbles and/or ficlets up to 1000 words (keeping in line that Giles Shorts is about short fic). If you are inspired to write longer fic to one or more prompts, we are happy to have you pimp it here, just provide a link to your story in your entry. Also, if you have a trope you have always wanted to write but don't see it prompted or don't want to wait to see whether it will be one of our prompts over the next four weeks, go ahead and write it and post! Every week we will provide a choice of three tropes for the prompts. Bonus points if you combine them!

This week's prompts are:

Bed Sharing
Hurt/Comfort
Time Travel

The highly anticipated event of the Giles Shorts calendar is finally here! Yes, it is finally time for March Madness!!! For those of you that are new March Madness, it is also known as the Last Line/First Line Challenge. It is an extremely fun event where we play together as a community. The person posting will take the last line of the previous drabble and reused it as the first line of their drabble.

And yes, I say drabble. Being a person who tends to write long (long, long fic), I know it's not easy to post a story in 100 words, but that is the goal here. If you are a few words over, that's okay, but try not to surpass 150 words. Every new drabble should be it's own entry and please don't forget to use headers for your drabble.

Here is the first line to start off the festivities:

Staring at the plane ticket in his hand, Giles took a deep breath and handed it to the agent.

Happy drabbling!

It's time for the last prompt of February. This week's prompt is:

Graveyard

This makes sense since Giles is Watcher to Buffy who is "Slayer comma the - she who hangs out in graveyards."

Remember that the other prompts are still in play (the Library, Giles' Home, and the Magic Box) or any other locations you might think of that inspire.

Just a heads up that next month is March Madness - our annual first line/last line challenge. We hope that you will join us for this fun event. Details will be posted on March 1st.

Real life continues to plague me and I apologise for the lateness of the prompt. This week's location prompt is:

The Magic Box

As always, no prompt within the month is closed, so draw inspiration from wherever it comes.

Sorry for being late. I've been having a bout of real life and suddenly found myself a day behind.

This week's prompt is:
Giles' Home

It could be his apartment in Sunnydale, his home in Bath, some dingy flat in London that he shares with Ethan and the gang, his room at the school his parents sent him to, whatever works for you and whatever era you wish to explore in Giles' life.

Have fun and write! :)

Welcome to February here at Giles Shorts and a new month means we have a new theme! This month's theme is:

Location, Location, Location

As usual, we will provide you with a prompt every week to help get the creative juices flowing, however you don't have to use them if some other location inspires you. Also, if you missed a weekly prompt and still would like to fill it, go ahead! No prompt is closed! And now without further ado, this week's prompt is:

The Sunnydale High School Library

I mean, of course it is! We'll start where we met him first. Happy writing and have fun!

We've made it to the final week of this month's theme, The Music of Sting, and this week's prompt is:

Author's Song Choice

That is right, you can choose any song in Sting's extensive repertoire. Here are a few obvious choices to help inspire the muse:

"Englishman in New York"
"If I Ever Lose My Faith in You"
"Don't Stand So Close to Me"
"The Book of My Life"

This includes any song from the previous week's prompts, from drabbles to ficlets, we aren't picky. That drabble runs over? Post it anyway!
littleotter73: pondering (Default)
[personal profile] littleotter73

It's time to change the prompt again, but don't worry. If something from one of the previous prompts should inspire, feel free to write and post away!

This week's prompt is:

The Police Years

There are so many great songs to choose from, but here are a few to get the creative juices flowing. Choose any or dig deeper into their discography.

"King of Pain"
"Every Breath You Take" (obviously)
"Every Little Thing She Does is Magic"
"So Lonely"

May the muse be with you!

[personal profile] littleotter73
I apologise for being a day late with the prompt. I got hit by the 24 hour stomach bug, but things are so much better today!

Anyway, for our second week of having Giles and ourselves inspired by Sting, this week sort of reflects the winter months with the album titled:

 Mercury Falling

And to help motivate the muse, here are a few song suggestions:

"Hounds of Winter"
"All Four Seasons"
"Lithium Sunset"
"I Was Brought to My Senses"

Go forth and drabble and if you are inspired by the previous week's prompt and didn't have the time to post in the last week, it doesn't have an expiration date, so feel free to post it any time.

Happy New Year, everyone! We hope you all had a relaxing and joyous holiday!

This month's theme is:
Music by Sting

We mods believe that Sting would figure prominently in Giles' record collection going back to the 70s with The Police, so we thought it would be fun to draw inspiration from music again. Sting is a prolific songwriter who's songs tell stories and are rich with imagery. He's also explored many musical genres: new wave, rock, jazz, reggae, classical, folk, and worldbeat (a blend of western rock or pop with traditional ethic musical elements from other cultures, ie "Desert Rose"). Giles, being a music lover, would have enjoyed the diversity of Sting's music.

Every week there will be a different prompt from an album or collection of albums with song title suggestions, but you can choose any song in that album that inspires.

This week's prompt (with a few song title suggestions) comes from:
Dream of the Blue Turtles
"If You Love Somebody Set Them Free"
"Shadows in the Rain"
"Moon Over Bourbon Street"

Just a reminder that any short fic inspired by the monthly theme is welcome and there is no time limit for when you need to post your prompt inspired works. If any prompt inspires longer fic or other fanworks (art or vids or playlists), you are welcome to pimp them here with a link to the work. We love Giles and want him to get all the love he deserves.

Welcome to December! This month's theme is:

Holiday Drabble Challenge

It works a bit like March Madness (last-line/first-line) in that someone will pick up the previous writer's prompt, but that prompt won't be a last line, it will just be a word or an idea the writer puts down for the next writer to pick up.

I will start Day 1 off and leave a prompt.

---------

Title: Christmas 1978
Author: littleotter73
Character: Giles and his mother
Rating: FRC
Word Count: 100
Prompt: Telephone (thank you [personal profile] il_mio_capitano  for getting me started)
Disclaimer: For fun, not profit.

The wind whipped off the Thames, piercing his skin and further chilling his bones. He hugged himself tighter in his black leather jacket, his tattered, moth eaten jumper worn beneath and ripped jeans doing nothing to help insulate his already too thin frame.

Finding a phone box, he stepped inside for respite, stamping his feet and blowing air into his chapped, red hands before picking up the receiver.

"Hello?"

He hesitated at her gentle voice.

"Hello? Rupert... is that you?"

He remained silent.

"Rupert, son, come home"

Squeezing his misting eyes shut, he rang off and whispered, "Happy Christmas, Mum."

Next prompt: Egg Nog

So the theme for November is
BE KIND, REWIND
This means that you can go back to any theme or prompt from 2017 and use that. Though we always welcome fic from older prompts, this month we are actively encouraging it! Did you have an idea for a prompt but did have time to write? Write it now!

For this week, we turn to something that Giles has had a long fascination with:
MAGIC!!!

As usual, our image this week is courtesy of [personal profile] littleotter73.

Remember, there's no time limit for when you need to post your prompt-inspired works. We welcome prompts from previous themes and prompts at any time. Drabbles or ficlets of any length are most welcome. Go wherever the muse takes you, including any pairings and characters that you please, just as long as Giles somehow involved.

Don't forget, Giles's Halloween Fanfic Extravaganza is just one week away on the October 31st!!
Happy writing!!

Welcome to our last week for the Giles's Record Collection monthly theme. As you might have guessed, we've been picking our weekly prompts based on actual bands that Giles either mentioned or had in his record collection. So, how could we possibly end this month's theme without the weekly prompt of:

PINK FLOYD

In honor of this week's theme, [personal profile] littleotter73  has again made us some lovely fanart! More than one! You can find all her pretty art from this month's theme over here. Go tell her how much you like them!

The sub-prompts are again all Pink Floyd song titles, but you can bend and twist them anyway you want. Or use any other Pink Floyd songs or lyrics as inspiration.

"Comfortably Numb"
"Another Brick in the Wall "
"Wish You Were Here"

Remember, there's no time limit for when you need to post your prompt-inspired works. These are merely to get you inspired and get you writing. Drabbles or ficlets of any length are most welcome. Take these prompts wherever you see fit, including any pairings and characters that you please, just as long as Giles somehow involved.

Happy writing and see you next week!

This week's prompt is inspired by a certain scene during Season 4's "The Harsh Light of Day" as seen below...

That's right! This week's prompt is:
The Velvet Underground

Just like last week, we have addition sub-prompts for you, if you are interested. These are all song tracks from Loaded, the specific album tha Oz was holding up. They are:
Who Loves the Sun
Head Held High
I Found a Reason

Remember, there's no time limit for when you need to post your prompt-inspired works. These are merely to get you inspired and get you writing. Drabbles or ficlets of any length are most welcome. Take these prompts wherever you see fit, including any pairings and characters that you please. Just as long as Giles is in the mix somewhere, of course!

As for another bit of housekeeping, as those of you on Tumblr might already know, Otter and I have started a Giles-dedicated blog, which you can find here. It's a good place to get some visual inspiration. To help with the writing we created a few tags for posts associated with the current theme. Here's the one for the Giles's Record Collection theme and this is the one for last week's Cream and/or Clapton prompt and this is the one for the Velvet Underground.

Happy writing and see you next week!
