Last Line Prompt: Why Does That Not Suprise Me?

"Why does that not surprise me?"

"Well, Giles, you study vampires and train Slayers. Why would anything surprise you?"

"Yes, Xander, my whole life is a magical mystery tour. I’m sorry that you will be unable to do any research this afternoon because you fell asleep during a math quiz and need to retake it. Sorry, but not surprised."

"It snuck up on me. One minute I was thinking about what “x” was and the next, Mr McBride was shaking my shoulder."

"Very unsettling."

"I can’t begin to tell you," Xander grinned. "Just don’t ask what I was dreaming about."

Characters Giles, Spike

“Forever is a long time.” Trapped with his unwelcome guest, Giles is drawn into desultory conversation with Spike. “Living history, so to speak.”

“You don’t know the half of it, book boy. Keeping up with fashion, you know, was a full time job. At the beginning it was all waistcoats, spats, watch fobs. Then things got more casual.”

“Plus fours?“ Giles suggested.

“Never! Finally I got to the classic look I have today.” Spike gave Giles a good look-over, “Have you always dressed like that? Because you’d have fit right in when I was turned.”

Giles smiled but said nothing.

Last Line: Let's find out.

"Let's find out," Giles said. Giles had just been lectured at length about his failure as a Watcher with the implication that the new man was going to set things right.

The new Watcher, Wesley Wyndam-Pryce , looked doubtfully at the Giles. "Of course, you've had a bit of field service but it's been a long time since you've been at the Academy. Techniques have improved quite a bit."

"As I said, let's see if your being Watcher to Buffy is what you imagine it to be."

Wyndam-Pryce thought that half-smile on Giles' face looked sinister. He didn't like it.

Last Line: Some rules matter.

Some rules mattered, some didn't, Buffy firmly believed. When Giles tells you to have a good supply of Holy Water ready at all times, or that you must train constantly to be razor sharp, that was important.

But when you bail out of your bedroom window after your Mom tells you that you're grounded. Well, a Slayer has to see the big picture. Vampires don't play by any rules. Except staying out of sunlight.

And if you're out but don't come across any bad guys, why not stop at the Bronze. A Slayer deserves a night off now and then.

Characters: Giles, Ethan
Setting: Pre-Buffy

"I promise."

"You say that with conviction, almost as though you mean it."

"Giles, you have to learn to trust me."

"Shall I count the ways, Ethan? You promise, then you do as you please. No more magic. I'm serious."

"Yes, dear boy, you've become boringly so. I'll put away my toys." He put his hand on his heart, "Girl Guide's honor."

Giles hoped that'd be the end of it. But, of course, it wasn't.

There were conversations, then shouting and slammed doors. Reconciliations and betrayals. Drinking and sulking.

What could there be then? There was one last word. Goodbye.
