Ethan stopped teasing him about poking around bookshops after he’d brought home that old spell book. And if anyone asked, the poetry was to impress girls. But, in reality, he could no more abandon his books than he could stop breathing. The musty smell as he walked through the bookshop door, the triumph of a successful hunt, the joy in an unexpected treasure, the comfort of a paperback in his back pocket, they were all a part of him.

Ripper had left behind everything that had to do with Rupert Giles, but he took his love of books with him.

Giles's Record Collection Prompt: "My Father's Eyes" (Eric Clapton)
Notes: Post Season 5. Just when, I'll leave up to you

My father had the kindest eyes. Even at his most serious, you could always see the laughter lurking behind them.

After his Slayer’s death, I know he tried to be just as good of a father and husband as he was before. I never doubted that he was proud of me and it was obvious that he adored my mother. But his eyes were never the same. There was a sorrow in them that never quite went away.

I now think about that every morning when I look in the mirror and my father’s weary eyes stare back at me.

Last line prompt: "It wasn’t exactly what he’d had in mind "

It wasn’t exactly what he’d had in mind when he found out he was to be posted to the Hellmouth. Becoming the epitome of the tweedy British stereotype. Hiding all his academic degrees that a librarian hired by the Californian public school system just wouldn’t have. He would even have to drive an old banger of a car to better fit the image.

He was leaving behind London, a job he loved at the British Museum and the promise of starting something up again with Olivia.

All for a Slayer he knew nothing about. She had better be worth it.

Characters: Giles, Buffy
Rating: General
Prompt: Well I wrote it to snow but lost the fake snow with the reindeer display and there's a distinct focus on Christmas crackers so I modified it for "pulling crackers"

Disclaimer: They aren't mine, not yet, but they will be ... once I've taken over the world! Bwah-ha-ha!

He spent the early hours of the evening waiting (hoping) to hear the doorbell, but perhaps carolers didn’t sing at apartments and so Giles - after loading his pockets with a stake, a cross, and Holy Water - went out into the night. )

Title: Arrival
Character: Giles
Rating: G
Continuity:BtVS Season 6, “Bargaining, Part 1”.
Summary: A vignette as Giles arrives at Heathrow International Airport.
Length: ~ 490 words.

Disoriented and bleary-eyed, Giles let a single thought, a lone guiding principle—sleep (and perchance, not to dream)—direct his movements, following the throngs of people exiting his flight past one checkpoint to another. He yearned for the comfort and privacy of his own bed, but the cross-Atlantic flight had so drained him for his utter failure at scraping even one decent nap that he thought that any bed would do. Good thing, really, that his brain was half shut-down already to register the scandalous implications of that thought.

TITLE: Resignation
AUTHOR: LJS
PAIRING: None
RATING: G
SUMMARY: Canon-compliant; before "Bring on the Night," Season Seven.

“Be my guest,” Giles said, and folded his hands on the conference-room table. “Tell me where my information is suspect.”

Quentin Travers scowled. “It’s not the information as such, but the Watcher delivering it.”

Giles, weary of fighting these grey old men and women, weary of playing bloody Cassandra, rose. “The First Evil is coming. Make your preparations. I resign.”

“You swore an oath,” Travers said.

“And you have betrayed me time and again,” Giles said, “the contract is broken,” and shut the door behind him.

Then he sagged against old oak. Death was coming. He was on his own.

OK. Here we go with the first drabble of March challenge of last-line-first-line. Remember, to play along all you have to do is write a Giles drabble (100 words), that uses the last line as your first line. You don't have to follow the same story line.

Title: Music Man
Author:il-mio-capitano
Length:100
Rating; FRC
Characters: Giles

Giles looked at his battered guitar case with affection. He could do this, he could actually do this. Singing in a coffee shop would be a little different from the pub gigs he'd done in Brixton as a young man. He'd have to tone down the angry punk rock vibe he'd cultivated for one thing, but then, no-one was likely to throw bottles at him in the espresso pump, so the snarl and bravado  wouldn't be needed. He could simply express himself through music, away from the demons and the expectations of destiny. It was something he'd always needed.

Notes: Yeah, it's been a while since I drabbled and I'm sorry about that. I will try to do better.

Stupid, sodding thing. The bathroom faucet was not usually so hard to turn, but the splints on his fingers made it quite impossible. Giles sat on the side of his tub and brooded at his options. He'd been beaten, tortured, and broken into betraying secrets and now he couldn't even run a sink of water for himself. No wonder Buffy had run away - as a Watcher he'd totally failed.

Rising swiftly to the kitchen he returned with a knife, jammed it between the spokes and levered the faucet free. Bugger the landlord's damage deposit. He was not beaten yet.

Missing

Title: Missing
Prompt: change
Rating: G
Summary: Giles misses Buffy in L. A.
Note: Real Change is a magazine sold by people who are homeless in Seattle. I moved it to L. A. because (spoilers for my story!) I was trying to depict Giles as so caught up in his own problems that he missed a chance to find Buffy.

The click of his heels against the sidewalk sounded hollow and insignificant. Surprised he could even hear it over the roar of the traffic, Giles slumped down onto the first bench he found. He'd been so certain Buffy had returned to L. A., her old stomping ground. He stared ahead. The maze of promising possibilities had turned into a mess of dead ends.

“Real change? Hey, buddy, real change?” A woman stood before him, waving a magazine. Lodged behind her, in a shopping cart, he saw piles of bags, presumably all her worldly possessions.

“What? Oh, of course.” He handed over some change and tried to object when she pressed the magazine into his hand, but she merely let it go and moved on.

He checked his watch. There was just enough time to make a flight to Sunnydale if he left immediately. He dropped the magazine into the first trash can he passed, never noticing the title, Real Change, or the article about a gang, unusually fast and strong, possibly hyped up on PCP, and the girl who'd bested them.

“Excuse me. I think you are missing something? I found this wallet, is it yours, did you drop it?”

The grey haired git in the glasses was so old-school. Petey wanted to laugh at his twee pickup technique but instead he smiled knowingly. He loved gullible prey.

“Yeah, real public spirited of you, mister.” He gestured down an alley and turned when they were out of sight. “Didn’t nobody ever warn you about good looking young men, grandpa?” Petey vamped out but a wooden stake took him in the heart almost immediately.

“Didn’t anybody ever warn you about Watchers, sonny?”

In a Blaze of…

Dust hanging heavy in the air choked him as he approached the police barrier. Everything rushed around him as he stood, silently watching. Firefighters did battle against the threatening flames. Officers and paramedics searched desperately for survivors. Giles knew they wouldn’t find any. The building that stood ageless and imposing as part of his life for as long as he could remember was now only a tomb.

This was the day Watchers have awaited for centuries. The day they were called to rise up and enter the fight. This was the Council’s day of glory.

Giles turned and walked away.

A Merry Chase

By: T. Dunn

Rating: FRC

Pairing: None

Summary: Giles as a child was a handful.

Disclaimer: Joss Whedon created the character Rupert Giles. I only added a past for him.

Words: 140 (oops a little over)

A mother chased her five year old around the garden. “Gregory get out here and help me; he’s at it again!” she called to her husband when he pulled into the drive.

The little boy gave a merry chase; laughing as the fresh, green grass tickling his toes.

The parents came at him from two angles and was halted by his father. His mother approached with as stern a look as she could gather.

“Rupert, how many times have I told you? You cannot run around outside, in all your glory. Now get in the house and put your clothes back on.”

The boy walked solemnly back into the house. The parents looked one to the other and burst into laughter, eventually Gregory said, “His teacher is going to have her hands full when he goes to primary this autumn.”

Moving

What do you pack when your life’s about to change? Giles glanced around his flat. The Council had already procured him a furnished apartment. They also had strict guidelines on what would be accommodated. His, mostly professional, wardrobe. The weapons were essential, also a great many boxes of books. His personal belongings were low in priority. Not needed for his new focus on training the Slayer, therefore not permitted by the Council movers.

Giles tossed a few files into the top of a large, full box and sealed it. In block letters he wrote: RECORDS. It was, technically, the truth.

Title: The Hero
Fandom: BtVS
Summary: In Prophecy Girl Buffy punches Giles so he won't interfere when she goes after the Master. What Giles is thinking as he's coming to.
Rating: G
Characters: Giles mainly but references to Jenny and Buffy
Disclaimer: They will be mine, oh yes they will, once I've taken over the world. Bwah-ha-ha!
Note: Written for a prompt at Giles Shorts – sword

When Buffy's punch had knocked him down, Rupert's thoughts flew back to his favorite boyhood game: drawing Excalibur from the stone. All the great warriors had tried and failed. When the monsters had attacked, he'd grabbed the nearest weapon to hand, drawing the sword smoothly from the stone. “Creatures of darkness beware, for I am Arthur of the Britons and your death is at hand.”

When he winced Jenny was there, asking if he was alright. “I'm not Arthur.” That seemed to upset her. He tried to explain. “I'm not the one who wields the sword. At best, I'm Merlin.”
