She can't help staring at him, at his empty eyes, at the useless glasses in his pocket. It's been a week, and they're still no closer to solving this problem, solving his problem. He hasn't giving her one of his scolding glowers in a week or touched his glasses in the last three days. He can't read his books. He can only sit there, trailing his fingers over Braille in borrowed texts.
She runs her hands over her own face, wishing she could close her eyes, but even when she does, he's still there, looking so helpless, being so helpless while she truly is the helpless one. She wants to cry, but she's afraid if one tear slips down her face, it will be the one that breaks the dam holding his together. She wants to fight something, kill anything, but nothing has made itself known to them yet to be killed. She wants to do anything, anything but feel so utterly helpless.
It's time to change his bandage again. She stands, grabs the kit they always keep nearby now, and approaches him. She hesitates only a moment, still so afraid of hurting him, before beginning to remove his bandage. Her fingers linger at his temples.
"Buffy." His voice is so soft that at first she doesn't hear him, but she does feel him, feel the tender care with which he raises her hands. He pulls her around to him. She can feel his arm through her jeans, but she can't take him like this, can't even consider the possibility. She's far too afraid of hurting him. She never knew he was so fragile until he woke blind that morning.
She wants to scream. If it was an injury, she'd take him to the best doctor, demand that he fix him, and even hold him at stakepoint, if that's what it took to get her Giles better. If it was a Demon, she would have long ago killed. An apocalypse, adverted. Hell, climbed their way out of it. She has an answer for everything but this.
He holds her hands in one of his. "It's not your fault," he tells her and kisses her hands. "We are going to solve this, you know." He peers up at her, trying to see any sign of her, but Buffy knows he can not. Still, his words seem somehow to rattle inside of her very veins, instilling courage. He's still her Watcher, after all, even if he can't see her.
Another piece of her heart breaks at the thought, but at the same time, she begins to smile. She drops down into his lap. "I know," she tells him. "I'll just be so glad when you can see me doing this again," and with that, she kisses him. They may not have an answer for this latest tragedy yet, but together, somehow, some way, they will get one and will win his day.
