In a cold room where the new recruits learned their jobs, trapped in desks too small for them, the lecturer said, “The Watcher is the hand that wields the sword, the Slayer,” and young Giles dutifully wrote it down in his notebook.

Years later, in a room that felt cold even in a Sunnydale June, he found that notebook. He reread the words. The Watcher is the hand that wields the sword.

He thought of Buffy, who’d never listened, who’d always followed her heart, who’d leapt into death.

“Bloody fools,” he said, and threw the book against the wall.
