They have no idea he's watching them. Both their heads are buried deeply into books, as his own should be, but he's far too busy thinking to pay attention to the printed page. He surveys the young redhead first, then his furtive glance moves to the boy across from her.

He looks up as a third member to their party enters. Her high heels echo in the quietness of his library. Both Xander and Willow cast glances upward to her, but none of them speak. There are no quibbles at this time, only silent understanding as she sits back down and resumes reading.

He pushes his glasses back up on his nose and glances at the clock on the wall. It's one minute pass midnight, and no one but he has noticed. There's no complaint of how they're spending this New Year's Eve, not even from Cordelia. They are all in agreement: They must find a way to save Buffy from this latest impending doom, and her Angel as well.

The turning of the year has always been a time for change, he muses, but no meager year has changed so many lives as much as the girl upon whom they're all bent to save. She's touched everybody here; that is, in fact, why they are here. She saved Xander from a lifetime of mundaneness; he never would have amounted to anything if not for her inspiration. She's pulled Cordelia and Willow both out of themselves, Cordelia actually stepping from the limelight to help some one of her own free will and Willow removing herself from her studies to help save the world time and again.

The girl has friends now, a reason to look pass her books, and a better life than she ever thought possible. Rupert smiles for he knows she's not the only one. Buffy has brought a fresh start to them all. He clears his throat softly.

Willow looks up instantly at the sound. "More tea?" she offers.

"Will," Xander speaks for the first time in over two hours, "just because he's English doesn't mean all he wants is tea. Offer the man a coke for once, will ya?"

"Xander, just because you want a coke," Cordelia begins, but Giles interrupts their argument before it can start.

"Actually," he inserts smoothly, "I was just going to wish you all a happy new year." His smile broadens at their puzzlement and then at their varied reactions before they all briefly celebrate the turn before settling back down to their research.

The End

I like the setting for this a lot. New year is time for introspection and it's lovely that Giles reviews the scoobies as both strong individuals and his friends as they work. The bonding of the group to include Giles was always a strength of the show and you capture it well here.

This is beautiful. Giles could see them all much clearer than they ever thought anyone could. His respect and love was clear, if subtle. You expressed that wonderfully in his thoughts here. Bravo!

Aww, Giles, you big softie! What beautiful reflection of his reflection on his young friends. Very sweet!
