It was something he’d always needed.

Reverently Giles took the Demonic Bestiary in his hands. The five-hundred-year-old bindng was soft against his skin. He smelled magic, old ink, and a hint of brimstone.

“Do you like it?” Anya said, leaning on his shoulder. “’Cause I saw it and thought of you. The vendor at the Society of Arcane Retailers trade show didn’t know what he had, I got it for a song.”

“It’s…” He couldn’t find the words. He swallowed, tried again. “Anya, it’s perfect. Thank you.”

He felt her smile against his ear. It was something he’d always needed.
