“I’ll watch over you,” Buffy encouraged. “You’re doing great. Just keep climbing up to me.”

Giles stopped to catch his breath and the rusty ladder groaned alarmingly as bolts screeched in protest. The smoke and heat from the cauldron below seemed inescapable.

“I’m getting too old for this, Buffy,” he gasped.

“Fine. We can talk about a retirement plan tomorrow. In the meantime, move your elderly ass up that ladder or I’m going to come down there and kick it for you.”

That was the trouble with ex-cheerleaders, he thought grudgingly as he climbed. It was always life and death.

The end doesn't really work properly but I wanted to leave a reasonable last line. I live and learn.
