It was a few days after Joyce's funeral, and Willow was desperately throwing herself back into her normal routine, hoping that it would help her to forget the desperate grief that she still felt at Joyce's sudden death. And, while it wasn't the escape she had been hoping for, she found that between Tara's support and her class schedule, she was at least coping. She had just gotten back from the last of her classes, and had decided to go through the mail that had built up since that terrible day before meeting up with Tara and the others at the Magic Box. Luckily, being an unemployed college student, there wasn't much to sort through, just the usual junk mail, and a rare letter form her parents.
Tossing it onto her bed to read later, Willow was about to get up from her desk when she saw the edge of an envelope sticking out from under a pile of papers. Pulling it out, she saw that it was addressed to her, but had no return address, and she didn't recognize the handwriting. She glanced at the postmark, but didn't recognize the name of the city either. Curious, she opened it and pulled out the letter. She had only read a few sentences, before she paled and ran out of her room.
Arriving at the Magic Box, panicked and out of breath, she saw the others sitting around the table looking as lost as she had been feeling just a short time ago.
Looking up at her sudden entrance, Xander forgot the joke he had been about to greet her with, saying instead "Wil? What's wrong? Did something happen?"
Still trying to catch her breath, Willow wordlessly held the letter out to the group, her hand still shaking. Taking it from her, Giles began to read it, the concern on his face changing to something deeper as the others looked on, waiting as patiently as they could to find out what else was going to go wrong for them.
Finally, her impatience getting the best of her, Buffy said "Well? what's happening? What's with the letter?"
Giles glanced up, so engrossed he'd forgotten they were there. He glanced at Willow briefly, and, at her nod, began to read: "Willow - my master, Moloch, wishes to share with you the joyous news of His growing strength, and that the means of His return is close to hand. Soon, He will lead his army from the depths of Limbo into this world, claiming it for His own. On that day, He will seek you out, eager to reclaim His love, to have you for Himself.
This time, you need not worry about any interference, for He has vowed that all those who have worked to separate you from Him will have been punished, especially the Slayer and Watcher, whose suffering my lord Moloch will take the greatest satisfaction in inflicting himself.
His only regret is that the Romani witch is beyond his reach, having been saved from His realm, and the righteous wrath she was due, by her tribe's interference. They will suffer in her place.
Look for the signs, and prepare eagerly for His return, for the day when he may truly claim your love in his true and proper form."
"T-there was no signature," Giles finished awkwardly, looking up from the letter to Xander and Buffy's shocked expressions and drawn faces, and Anya's confused one.
Tara, by now holding Willow and almost as pale as she was, asked "W-who is Moloch?" and what does he want with Willow?
"He's a demon creep that was obsessed with Willow back in high school" Buffy said, her shock quickly shifting to anger.
Giles began to explain further. "Moloch had been trapped for several centuries inside a book before being scanned-"
"Before I scanned him into a computer!" Willow interrupted, fear and anger in her voice.
"Before Willow accidentally scanned him into the computer" Giles gently corrected, before continuing. " From there, he managed to get onto the internet, and, having become obsessed with Willow, began, well, courting her. Thankfully, with the help of Jenny, the school's computer teacher, we were able to stop him. We had thought he was permanently defeated, but, well, it appears not." Giles finished.
"Where did the letter come from? Who sent it?" Xander asked.
"I don't know," Willow said. "There wasn't a name, and the postmark was from some town in New York I'd never heard of before. What are we going to do?" Willow asked, looking from Buffy, to Giles, and back to Buffy again.
Sighing, Giles removed his glasses and pinched his nose, his face looking tired and worn. "I can try to do some research as time permits, but right now, I'm not sure there's anything we can do."
"So, we're just going to sit here and do nothing while this creep stalks Willow all over again? Xander asked, outraged at the thought.
"Of course not!" Giles snapped in irritation before getting control of himself and continuing in a calmer tone. "But right now, there isn't much we can do. According to the letter, Moloch is still trapped in his realm, and his servants - and, therefore, his arm in this world - are all the way on the other side of the continent. Meanwhile, we have a much more immediate threat to deal with. If we do not find a way to stop Glory, then it won't matter what he has planned. Once we've dealt with her, then we can focus on Moloch."
Xander still didn't look convinced, but Willow chimed in before he could continue to argue. "He's right. Glory's out there right now, and has already made several attempts to get to Dawn. We need to stop her for good." Heading to the bookcase, she grabbed several particularly larges tomes and sat down at the table.
Reluctantly, the others followed her example, and continued their fruitless search to find the answer to defeating Glory.
Later that night, after Tara had fallen asleep, Willow slipped out of their bed to her oversize bag, pulling out some books she had "borrowed" from the Magic Box. These were Giles' most dangerous magick books, the ones he had told her she was to never go near without his permission. She knew he wouldn't be happy, but she didn't care. Moloch's return had stirred up feelings of helplessness and fear that she had thought long forgotten. And now, he was also threatening her friends, her family. She wouldn't stand by and let him, or anyone, hurt them. And she would never allow herself to feel that afraid and helpless ever again! But first, she went to her computer to research where the letter had come from... To find out all she could about Sleepy Hollow.
