Age Appropriate…Boring

By Trish Dunn

Rating: G

Pairing: Giles, his Mum

Summary: A little longer drabble so a dribble. With the prompt Book/Books.

Disclaimer: The character of Rupert Giles belongs to Joss Whedon. I thank Joss for letting me play around with Rupert’s past.

Rupert sat at the kitchen table; his feet dangling as he fidgeted with the work before him.

“Ru honey, what is wrong?” His mother asked when she heard his forlorn sigh.

“Do I have to do this?”

“It is required.”

“But who cares about Janet or John?”

“You finish in the next 10 minutes and I’ll give you a surprise.”

What five year old could resist the lure of a present? Rupert finished his work with time to spare.

“Here,” his mother handed him a book.

Opening to the beginning page he read…

‘In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.’

Rupert gave his mother a loving hug. “This is so much better. Thank you, Mum.” Then he ran off to continue reading in the comfort of his room.
