"So how do we kill it?"

"I . . . I'm afraid," Giles stammered, reaching simultaneously for his glasses and handkerchief and avoiding Buffy's questioning look. He hated when she looked at him so expectantly and he came up utterly short. "I . . . That is . . . "

"Giles," she spoke his name teasingly, but when he looked at her, she was smiling in an altogether different way. He paused as he gazed down into her eyes. She believed in him. She trusted him. She might even . . . No, she could never love him, but her belief in him was enough as a new idea suddenly sparked.

"Of course!" He slipped his glasses back on, left his handkerchief in his pocket, and dashed back into his rows of books. In scant seconds, he reappeared again, this time with the answer they sought, and when she looked up at him once more, that same, trusting, almost loving smile on her lips, Rupert at last understood the magic of a woman's smile. It could make a man do anything, even invent answers when he'd thought there was none.
