Title: Strange How the Knight Moves
Author: Quaggy
Word Count: 100
Last line prompt: “Think very carefully about your next move.”
Notes: I couldn't resist the pun on the Bob Seger song for the title.

“Think very carefully about your next move,” Giles cautioned.

Buffy huffed in aggravation and stared at the chessboard. She didn’t need the reminder. She knew she was in trouble and Giles’s grin confirmed it. He claimed that playing chess would sharpen her ability to think strategically, but privately she suspected that he liked it because he could beat her this way without taking a physical beating in the process. But wait… If she took her knight and moved it…

“CHECK!!!”

She may not have the upper hand for long, but it was worth it for the look on Giles’s face.

“I bit him.”

Giles looked back at Buffy’s sunny confidence with incredulity.

“Why on earth would you do that? Oh dear Lord, it didn't bite you as well did it?”

“No, Giles. You really would’ve been the first person I'd have told about that.”

“Thank you. I think. Nevertheless,” he continued. “Biting isn't exactly a traditional approach to the whole slaying dynamic.”

“I wasn't trying to slay him, he was running off with the amulet. This way, when we raid the nest, we can identify him again.”

“Yes, I suppose that could work,” conceded Giles. “He'll be the one laughing.”

Prompt: Last Line "I bit him"

"I bit him." Giles sighed at her disapproving look. "I also kicked him in a rather sensitive area as well. When one doesn't have Slayer strength, one must improvise."

"I don't care about the fighting dirty part," Buffy said with irritation, "I care about the danger to you part. What if that thing had been poisonous?"

"Nonsense." Giles said, looking at her oddly. "Although, its skin has been known to have hallucinatory effects on humans. For example, right now you seem to have turned a rather alarming shade of fluorescent yellow."

"Anything else?" Buffy asked, bemused.

"You also appear to be pulsating," Giles admitted.

"Ok, time to get you home so you can trip out without scaring the locals."

"Really, Buffy-"

"No arguments." Buffy said, "And I'll be sticking around to keep an eye on you."

"What next, going to tuck me into bed while you're at it?"

The heavy fog rose around Restfield Cemetery, reminding Giles of the summer holiday he’d spent with his grandparents at Dartmoor where he’d lost his way as the mist quickly rolled in across the moor, unable to get back to the cottage, all the local ghost stories racing through his mind. Even as a man of forty waiting for the undead to rise from their graves, nothing had ever terrified him more than being stranded on the fell. He shivered in the shadow of memory.

“Everything okay?” Buffy asked, bumping her shoulder against his arm.

“Of course,” he replied. “You’re here.”

Throwing his keys on his desk, Giles noticed the blinking light on his answerphone. There were no pleasantries, just an urgent plea from Buffy.

“Listen… about Willow. She’s out of control. Last week she was supposed to take Dawn to the movies, but stopped off at some seedy den for a magic fix. Her actions put Dawn in danger and broke her arm. Things are bad. She can’t stop. Every little thing she does is magic, nothing is off limits. Is there a witchy rehab or something?”

He quickly dialed the number for the Devon Coven. Perhaps they would help.

Prompt: snowed in (I may have cheated a tad)

Giles started as Buffy flew into their idyllic ski cabin.

“Quick,” she shouted. “Help me barricade this. Now!”

A great roar outside spurred him to action and they both fought to exclude a big angry, clawed paw and push cabinets and chairs against the door.

“What happened, Buffy?”

“You tell me. One minute I was skiing, minding my own business, sashaying some frankly rather stylish turns, next minute, 300lbs of abominable snowman was hot on my tracks. And boy, can that thing shift.”

“But this is Aspen’” Giles said indignantly.

Buffy huffed.

“You wanna go outside and tell Bigfoot that?”

“A wise man once said, ‘testosterone is the great equalizer. It turns all men into morons,’ if I remember correctly,” Buffy said, her voice teasing.

“Yes, but did it have to happen so soon?”

She shrugged. “Our baby boy is growing up.”

“He’s still so young!” Giles protested.

“It’s time, Giles,” she entreated as the six month beagle puppy bounded in to the room growling and shaking a stuffed teddy bear. “And right on cue…” she laughed.

“I know,” he sighed in resignation, picking up the pup and cuddling him close. “Come on, Puck, off to the vet we go.”

“Where are you?”

Buffy looked around, flanked by tall hedges and nothing but a lane and a half wide road ahead of and behind her. Shaking her head, she huffed, “I have no idea. I followed the signs but… what is it with the road system here?”

“You have to give me something to go on if I am to bring you petrol.”

“Gas, Giles! Gas!”

“You’re in my country now, and we say petrol. PE-TROL. Say it with me,” he teased over the phone.

“Just help me figure out where I am,” she laughed. “It’s starting to snow.”

Title: High and Dry
Author: Quaggy
Word Count: 500 approx.
Rating: G
Rewind Prompt: Horsepower (His Favorite Things)
Notes: This is as much inspired by the Radiohead song "High and Dry" as it was by the "Horsepower" prompt, more for the mood that the song than the actual lyrics. Well, other than the "flying on your motorcycle" line, of course.

It was the first sunny day in forever. Buffy had opened the window to get some fresh air in her room, when a movement from the courtyard of the Slayer Compound below caught her eye. She watched as Giles pulled out his motorcycle, a classic bike from the 1960s that he was absolutely crazy about. It was the perfect day to take a ride through the English countryside. He looked utterly happy in a way she hadn’t been used to seeing until recently. He was so in his element here, teaching Slayers how to be Slayers and Watcher how to be Watchers. It was clear that he had found his place and was completely at peace.

She was not. She’d never felt more useless and alone. They all said they needed her, but she really didn’t see it. Anybody could teach these baby Slayers just as well or even better than she could. But the real problem was when class was over. She just didn’t fit in anywhere. She was too young to really relate to the other teachers, all retired Watchers, some of whom were decades older than Giles. She was too under-educated and over-experienced to have much to talk about with the Watchers-in-training. And she was too old to hang with the other Slayers, even if she wasn’t their teacher. Giles was the only one that she was truly comfortable with, but that was part of the problem. The more time that she spent with him, the more that the wayward feelings she thought she had buried long ago began to resurface.

Maybe it was time to move on. Find her own place in the world, if such a place existed. At least go somewhere where the sky was blue on a regular basis. Go someplace where her heart wouldn’t break over something she’d never have. Yes, she knew what she should do and it was well past time that she did it. Buffy closed her eyes and turned her head away from Giles and towards the sun to better feel its warmth on her face. She only opened her eyes when she heard someone call her name.

“Buffy!” Giles called again and waved when she looked his way. He looked so like an excited child that she couldn’t help but smile.

“Off for a ride?” she called back.

“Yes! Would you like to come?” he asked with eager enthusiasm. Buffy paused. On one hand, she really shouldn’t. Snuggled up next to him on the back of his bike would only make her inconvenient crush worse. On the other hand, she didn’t think she had it in her to outright reject him like that. As if sensing her indecision, Giles waved his hand beckoningly, beaming at her all the while. And Buffy was lost.

“I’ll be right down,” she called and, if possible, Giles’s grin grew even wider. Oh, this wasn’t good for her heart at all, but, honestly, how could she resist?

Rewind Prompt: Giles's Record Collection
Notes: This may or may not be inspired by an actual conversation I had with a relative of mine. Ignore the B/G undertones if that's not your thing.

“Buffy?”

“Yes, dear?”

“One of the new Slayers… well…”

“Oh, no! I knew that this year’s party was going too well! What is it?”

“No. Nothing bad. Just damn unnerving.”

“Giles, we’ve been hosting these holiday parties for ten years now. We’ve had monster invasions, cat fights, break ups and hook ups. We’ve fielded intrusive questions about dating vampires and Watcher/ Slayer relations. It wouldn’t be a party if something unnerving didn’t happen!”

“True. That one Slayer with the hat? I found her in front of my record collection. She was quite enthusiastic.”

“That’s not surprising. You have great taste.”

“Not about the collection itself. That we were keeping with the times by investing in vinyl. Buffy, those records are older than she is!”

“What…? Oh! Don’t worry! It’s a just hipster thing. Next time just smile and nod and hope they go away.”

“A hipster? I don’t want to know, do I?””

“Probably not.”

“She hadn’t heard of a fraction of the bands. She asked if George Harrison was any good and said that she liked to keep track of up-and-coming musicians. Stop laughing, Buffy. It’s not funny!”

“Yes, it really is!”

“Well, perhaps that part’s a little funny.”

“Do you really think all this refined sugar is necessary?” Buffy called from the kitchen staring in awe at the cauldron of candy Giles had put together. “I mean, honestly, how many British kids are going to come knock on your door for trick or treating?”

“I posted signs around the neighbourhood last week,” Giles assured her confidently, entering the room decked out in full Ziggy Stardust costume. The door bell rang and he picked up the cauldron, looking triumphant. “Besides, all children love sweets and dressing up.”

Buffy shook her head in amusement. “Not just the children…” she muttered.

Giles's Record Collection Prompt: "Wish You Were Here" (Pink Floyd)
Notes: Crossed posted on my journal and over here on AO3. Set post-series. Obviously, the song playing was "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd.

It was just another night out at the pub. Nothing special. The usual bunch Watchers and Senior Slayers unwinding, having a drink and a chat. Tonight, at least for the moment, it wasn’t so loud that you couldn’t hear the music playing in the background.

Giles froze at the opening bars, which caught Buffy’s attention from the corner of her eye. She watched as he quietly made his way over to a nearby sofa and sat down. Pulled into himself.

She knew the song too. Knew he must be thinking of someone that he had lost and, God, he had lost so many people along the way. He could be thinking about anyone, honestly. But it didn’t matter if it was somebody she had never met. She wasn’t going to leave him alone with his pain.

She slipped down next to him and rested her head on his shoulder. Instantly, his arm came around her, pulling her close, and he planted a fervent kiss on her head. Blinking back tears, she wrapped her arms around him and held back just as tightly.

They sat like that long after the song ended, as the party continued to swirl around them unaware.

Buffy rolled her eyes. “You’ve lived in the good ol’ USA for how long and have never had lime sherbet punch?”

She ladled him a cup of the green potion and he recoiled in horror, shaking his head.

“I’ll, uh, pass on the swamp water.”

Buffy’s face was a mask of confusion. “Why?”

“Your friends, no matter how well intentioned did you a disservice.” Before she could ask Giles continued. “They pulled you out of Heaven, brought you back and assumed you would fit into your old life as if you had never been gone.”

Tears glistened in Buffy eyes as he spoke.

She turned and looked at him so sadly when he said that he was returning to England, but she didn’t seem surprised.

“I figured. You need to set up operations in London, right?”

“Yes, but I can stay here, if I’m needed.” But his words seemed to only make her more forlorn.

“Not as much as you are there. No one else can do what you do.” And suddenly, Giles realized that in a world full of Slayers, Buffy might reasonably assume that no one needed her.

Except he did. Down to his very soul.

“If I come with you, you’ll never be able to get rid of me,” she warned, blinking back tears.

“Promise?”

“Exactly. It was only after our shared dream that I noticed it was gone completely.”
