Author: il-mio-capitano
Length: 100
Characters: Giles, Buffy
Rating: FRC

“I bit him.”

Giles looked back at Buffy’s sunny confidence with incredulity.

“Why on earth would you do that? Oh dear Lord, it didn't bite you as well did it?”

“No, Giles. You really would’ve been the first person I'd have told about that.”

“Thank you. I think. Nevertheless,” he continued. “Biting isn't exactly a traditional approach to the whole slaying dynamic.”

“I wasn't trying to slay him, he was running off with the amulet. This way, when we raid the nest, we can identify him again.”

“Yes, I suppose that could work,” conceded Giles. “He'll be the one laughing.”

prompt: for the first line last challenge!

Staring at the plane ticket in his hand, Giles took a deep breath and handed it to the agent. Computer keys clicked as she efficiently took him through the ritual. Passport please. Large baggage on the conveyor scales. Hand luggage size? Had he packed everything himself? Had anyone else had access in the meantime? He grimly thought terrorism would be a nice change of pace after what he'd just been through, but gave the expected answers and was rewarded with boarding card, baggage claim stickers and a professional smile of curt dismissal. This was really happening. He was running away.

Title: Bitter
Author: il-mio-capitano
Length: 100
Characters: Giles, Deirdre
Rating: FRC
Prompt: chocolate (yeah, I struggled a bit)

Deirdre padded up the stairs as if in a trance. She caught sight of Randall’s untidy bedroom with its chocolate and orange bedclothes heaped on the mattress on the floor. She wasn't going to share those anymore, she thought grimly. Pressing on, she reached the attic window, slipped the catch and climbed out onto the roof. The city skyline was cold and dark and unforgiving and she perched on the very edge, waiting for the numbness to spread.

“Deirdre, are you ok?”

Of course, Ripper had followed her.

“What did we just do?” she spat. “And why wasn't it you?”

Characters: Giles, Buffy
Rating: FRC
Prompt: snowed in (I may have cheated a tad)

Giles started as Buffy flew into their idyllic ski cabin.

“Quick,” she shouted. “Help me barricade this. Now!”

A great roar outside spurred him to action and they both fought to exclude a big angry, clawed paw and push cabinets and chairs against the door.

“What happened, Buffy?”

“You tell me. One minute I was skiing, minding my own business, sashaying some frankly rather stylish turns, next minute, 300lbs of abominable snowman was hot on my tracks. And boy, can that thing shift.”

“But this is Aspen’” Giles said indignantly.

Buffy huffed.

“You wanna go outside and tell Bigfoot that?”

Prompt: uninvited guest(s)

Opening his front door, Giles saw first a sprig of mistletoe suspended over a bottle of wine, and then the warm eyes of Jenny Calendar.

“Jenny,” he spluttered, conscious his voice was about an octave too high. She smiled playfully back.

“How do you feel about some wassailing, Rupert?”

“Um. Generally I feel good about it, but um…” He broke off as she stepped inside and wrapped her arms over his shoulders

“It's the night before Christmas,” she teased. “And all through the house, not a creature was staring not even a - my god! Is that Xander on the couch?”

Next prompt: Wise Men (or Man if that helps)

Giles frowned at the contents of the pitcher before them.

"No disrespect to your mother, Spike, but are you sure you have the ingredients right? It looks gloopy. Is it supposed to be that colour? It looks positively anemic."

"Well if you care to open a vein, Watcher, we could bring the colour right back to its cheeks."

"I hardly believe that was in your mother's original recipe."

"Probably not," Spike agreed. "What say we add a quart of scotch?"

"I'd say it was a waste of good scotch. How about some bourbon?"

Spike grinned.

"Now that's the festive spirit!"

Next prompt: Out of gas

Last line: She was going to need it.

She was going to need it. Giles ordered burgers and sodas from the waitress and looked across the booth at Faith’s sad, pale figure.

“It’s over now. You did a good job.”

She made no answer and the sodas arrived. Giles blanched and ordered himself tea.

“What you saw,” he began. “The vision. It doesn’t mean it has to come to true.”

She looked at him.

“Faith, we defy prophecies daily. You are stronger than you realise. You are not going to blow your brains out in a cheap motel.”

“But it wasn’t me that I saw. It was you.”

But when Buffy came down the stairs in that little black dress, stilettos, and the bright red lipstick that accentuated her pout, he knew his plans were doomed.

"Where do you think you're going?" Giles cautiously asked.

"I'm your 'plus one'."

"The invitation doesn't include a 'plus one'."

"The invitation doesn't include the bit about it being a big fat trap for gullible watchers." She smiled sweetly. "Maybe the card was too small?"

Giles turned and tugged at his bow tie in the mirror.

"I can look after myself, you know," he griped. "You can't possibly be carrying any weapons."

Following on from It Doesn't All Suck Last line: Destiny had dealt her a solid.

Destiny had dealt her a solid pair of aces and Jenny wasn't going to pass up the opportunity. She stared provocatively across the card table at Rupert and tried to fluster him, but he drank his beer and stared back impassively - damn the man!

"Maybe we should make this hand interesting, English?"

"We have an equal amount of chips left," he said neutrally.

She slipped off her jacket to reveal more of her silk blouse.

"I'm prepared to go all in." She lent forward as she spoke and caught him looking. "And you'll have to call me to find out."

Following on from: A Slayer's Destiny last line: After all, it was her destiny.

After all, it was her destiny to fight the dark forces of evil alone. Nevertheless, as Buffy surveyed what seemed to be the most law abiding cemetery in the history of Undead Sunnydale, such a destiny kinda sucked on the slow nights.

Footsteps on the gravel path piqued her interest but it was only Giles. She ignored him pointedly, and he, saying nothing in return, sat down and proceeded to pour a thermos of tea, the smell of which had her wrinkling her nose in disapproval. However, things improved when he produced cake.

"You'd better have brought enough to share."

What the hell was wrong with her?

"Faith!" Giles shouted again but still she remained motionless at the top of the chasm, mesmerised by the demon's swirling golden void. "Oh, bloody hell."

He scrambled up and grabbed her arm. "Come away. I don't care what you think you can see in there."

She flicked him away effortlessly, her gaze still on the mystical eddies below and Giles grew genuinely frightened. "Please."

"But I can see what happens, Giles. A cheap motel, a bottle of scotch, a handgun..."

"You're stronger than that, Faith."

She turned and looked at him so sadly.

"Forever?" Giles stammered.

The yellow eyes flashed in amusement. The sharp teeth, which couldn't obscure the essential mischievousness that had once been Ethan, glistened.

"I'm not leaving you behind to rot as a human, Ripper. It will be like old times." He took a predatory step nearer. "Except we will have eternity together."

Giles' retreat hit the wall behind him, causing him to yelp.

"Could we not just start with coffee?" he bleated.

Ethan was close now, his hand slowly caressing Rupert's cheek.

"I think we've gone beyond that, don't you?"

Giles gripped the stake in his pocket.

"I guess."

She watched him leave with a wicked smile on her face. Uncle Enyos had been disturbed at her report that the hated vampire had been making friends within the school and had adamantly insisted she pursue these friends.

“These children must be found and watched, Janna.”

He had been angry and righteous until Jenny had meekly agreed to obey him at which he had blessed her head and called her his child again.

As the door closed she smiled at her neglect in mentioning the role of the Librarian in Angel’s life. She wanted to keep him all to herself.

Last line: The one thought he did not allow in his mind was that it was all too much for him, that he was running away. (24 words!)

The one thought he did not allow in his mind was that it was all too much for him, that he was running away. No. His was a completely rational decision, and so what if he was dressing softly in the middle of the night so as not to wake the figure on the mattress? Staying with Ethan would be running away, plunging further into hedonistic magicks in an attempt to destroy what was left of Rupert Giles would be running away. Those would be cowardly actions, not this.

Nevertheless, he picked up his boots and crept out in shame.

Last line: He needed to fix this, but how?

He needed to fix this but how? Giles looked in panic at the pile of dust on the carpet that had formally been Spike. He shouldn't have done it, but the vampire had been giving him such aggravation all day, that he'd practically asked for it. Surely Buffy would understand?

No, she would not. Oh hell!

Wasn't there a spell that was said to reconstruct a body? And perhaps another to reconnect Spike's soul? That could work and she'd never have to know what had happened.

On the other hand... Giles reached a decision and switched on the vacuum cleaner.

Spike mustered all his soul into an expression of contempt.

"Don't be a plonker, Rupert. This requires the good stuff. Break out the single malt. My heart is literally in pieces on your floor here, mate."

"Well not 'literally' literally," Giles muttered to himself. Some men were cursed with many burdens, his was having to listen to every Buffy break-up story.

"You've got to speak to speak to her, Rupes. I've written something down for you."

Giles narrowed his eyes at the paper.

"Are these rhyming couplets?"

He'd lost his resolve before but never with such humiliating consequences.

"Giles, you promised me you'd try this. You said, quite clearly, in front of witnesses that you would agree to anything I asked for my birthday."

He looked horror-stricken at Buffy.

"But you can't hold me to that promise. I thought you just wanted to go to the mall. This requires intimacy and equipment."

"You're already wearing the harness. Nothing will go wrong."

"But it's pinching."

The safety guy on the bridge gestured them forward.

"Ok, next couple. Your turn to jump."

Last line: He wasn't the man she wanted.

He wasn't the man she wanted him to be. The party had been wild and reckless, but now he was alone with the prettiest girl, Ripper saw past the mixture of lust, drink and drugs in her young waxy eyes and realised she was probably no more than fifteen. God, it was a terrible thing to be a responsible adult at twenty-one, and though she flung all manner of curses at him as he grabbed his jacket and fled the room, it was still the right thing to do.

He lit a cigarette and walked home. Some rules mattered.

Last line challenge: Goodbye.
Author's note: yes, I'm cheating a bit.

"Good buy, Giles!" Anya exclaimed, reading the inbound shipping manifest. "Because our inventory really needed the shot in the arm of 200 crystal skull paperweights."

He snatched the paperwork from her. "What? I only ordered twenty."

"But why buy any at all? There are only so many suckers out there who buy this kind of crap. Call the wholesaler at once and cancel."

"It, um, wasn't the regular wholesaler. It was more a sort of, um, special supplier."

"Special blonde or special brunette?"

A second delivery truck pulled up outside, and then an eighteen-wheeler.

"Giles, what have you done?"

Kicking off March Madness...here goes the first Drabble. The last line is all yours to spin from.

Title: Parental Pressure

Giles looked at the sporty red motorcycle for sale, and the possibilities thrilled his middle-aged heart. His dad had forbidden him one twenty-five years earlier, but then his dad had pretty much forbidden everything back then, and there was absolutely no reason to feel bound by his strict rules and censure now.

He'd only managed six blocks on the test ride when he suddenly had to pull over and cut the engine. It hadn't been his father who'd stopped him, it had been his mum, and she hadn't even said a word. Her eyes just said it all.
