So I am bringing it around full circle to close out March Madness. This drabble starts with the last active last line from foreverbooks' drabble 'Best Laid Plans...' (the 3 other drabbles used last lines from older drabbles that had fills) and ends with the very first prompt that started things off.

Title: An Airport Proposition

Author: littleotter73

Characters: Giles

Rating: FRT

Setting: Pre-Series

Word Count: 100

Prompt: “They can do that?” from foreverbook’s Best Laid Plans…

Disclaimer: Just for fun, not profit

“They can do that, you know,” Giles overheard standing in the queue while waiting to board.

“No!” exclaimed the companion.

“But the coolest thing? Immortality! Think of all the sex…”

“Oh man! If only…”

Giles rolled his eyes at the lack of originality.

“Imagine it!” the one dared as they headed off together.

Giles sighed, leaving the queue. Once in gents, he dusted the vamp and told the bloke to bugger off.

It certainly was an auspicious start to his journey. Staring at the plane ticket in his hand, Giles took a deep breath and handed it to the agent.

 Title: An Unfortunate Proposal

Author: littleotter73

Characters: Giles, Buffy, Xander

Setting: Post Chosen, no comics

Word Count: 100

Prompt: “And they say romance is dead” from DHW’s The Lambeth Lothario

Disclaimer: Just for fun, not profit

“And they say romance is dead,” Giles scoffed.

Xander covered his face. “I know!”

“Well, I think it’s sweet, Xand,” Buffy defended.

Really?” Giles questioned. “I suppose it’s every woman’s dream her lover will propose while she’s retching into the commode.”

Xander looked up miserably. “I just I thought, as bad as this is, I’d rather be holding her hair while she's puking than with anyone else having a good time… and it just came out.”

“Aww,” Buffy sighed.

“Still, she’s kinda angry.”

“Imagine that!”

“Giles!” Buffy hissed.

“What? He did cock it up.”

“How about showing a little support?”

Author: littleotter73

Characters: Giles/Buffy

Rating: FRC

Word Count: 100

Prompt: “Why does that not surprise me?” from il_mio_capitano’s More Strange Moves

Disclaimer: Just for fun, not profit

“Why does that not surprise me?” Buffy growled, pushing her way through the door.

“Excuse me?”

“You! You and your… Britishness!”

“I’m afraid I don’t follow.”

“Of course you wouldn’t!”

Giles blinked owlishly at her.

“Your… ingrained need to… repress! Everyone spilled their guts tonight because of that truth serum-y demon blood. And you… all you had to say was, ‘Sorry, Xander, I ate the last slice of pizza!’”

“Well, everyone blamed him.”

“I told you I’m in love you. I just thought maybe… that you might…”

Taking her hands in his, he replied gently, “That's never been a secret.”

Title: A Slayer’s Constitution

Characters: Giles, Buffy

Rating: FRC

Setting: Early Season 1

Word Count: 100
Prompt: "For a moment, his heart stopped." from harmony033's drabble Missing

Disclaimer: For fun, not profit

For a moment, his heart stopped. She’d just taken a blow that would’ve stopped a charging rhino, and it felt like several lifetimes passed before Giles got his legs moving. This couldn’t be it. It was too soon. They’d just started their partnership not long ago.

Upon his approach, Buffy popped up. “Is that the best you’ve got, hot shot?” she quipped, dodging the molten metal the monster spewed in her direction. “Sword, Giles, now!”

Without hesitation she dispatched the demon. Noting his concern as she rolled her right shoulder, she said, “I’ve taken worse.”

Somehow that wasn’t a reassurance.

Title: Long Distance Goodbye

Author: littleotter73

Character: Giles

Rating: FRC

Word Count: 100

Prompt: “Giles struck a match and wept” from harmony033’s drabble Choice

Disclaimer: For fun, not profit

Giles struck a match and wept at the news. He’d meant to light the candle, but the fire traveled down the stem and burnt his fingers before he realised it.

“Dammit!” he growled, shaking the blaze out and sticking his singed forefinger in his mouth, remembering how, as a small child, he’d burnt his fingers on the stove. His mother had quickly picked him up, carried him over to the sink, and very tenderly put his fingers under a gentle stream of cold water before bandaging them and kissing his tears away.

“Oh, Mum,” he whispered reverently. “I miss you.”

Word Count:100

Prompt: “You found me.” from il_mio_capitano’s drabble Saying It With Flowers

Disclaimer: Just for fun, not profit

“You found me,” Ripper stated, looking up at his gran defiantly. “What now?”

“Depends on you, I suppose,” she replied, settling herself into the bench opposite him. “The Council are cleaning up the mess with the police. You are in the clear.”

“How do you know it was me?” he challenged.

“Rupert, I’ve been practicing magicks since I was a child, do you honestly think I would be unable to trace the signature back to you?”

His shoulders dropped and he let out a raggedy sigh. “I tried to stop it, Gran.”

“I know, my dear boy. Let’s go home.”

Author: littleotter73

Rating: FRC

Characters: Giles, not!Giles, Buffy, Willow, Anya

Word Count: 100

Prompt: “Oh!” Last line from DHW’s drabble Dreamtime

“Oh!” Buffy muttered, studying the grimoire. Glancing across the Magic Box at Giles, she explained quietly, “It’s a possession demon.”

“Are you sure?” Willow asked.

“Come on, Wil, Giles is never that happy for that long.”

Anya shrugged. “Perhaps he’s getting some.”

Willow rolled her eyes. “How do we get rid of it?”

“Says here, there’s a spell-“

A gleeful laugh filled the Magic Box as possessed Giles lit several vile slug candles.

“Give. Now!” Willow gestured with grabby hands.

Once the demon was exorcised, a vexed, bewildered Giles coughed at the noxious fumes. “Bloody hell!”

Buffy grinned. “He’s back!”

Title: In the Mist

Author: littleotter73

Characters: Giles, Buffy

Rating: FRC

Word Count: 100

Prompt: Graveyard

Disclaimer: For fun, not profit.

The heavy fog rose around Restfield Cemetery, reminding Giles of the summer holiday he’d spent with his grandparents at Dartmoor where he’d lost his way as the mist quickly rolled in across the moor, unable to get back to the cottage, all the local ghost stories racing through his mind. Even as a man of forty waiting for the undead to rise from their graves, nothing had ever terrified him more than being stranded on the fell. He shivered in the shadow of memory.

“Everything okay?” Buffy asked, bumping her shoulder against his arm.

“Of course,” he replied. “You’re here.”

Rating: FRC

Setting: Season 6

Word Count: 100

Prompt: Music of Sting - The Police Years, "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic"

Disclaimer: Just for fun, not profit

Throwing his keys on his desk, Giles noticed the blinking light on his answerphone. There were no pleasantries, just an urgent plea from Buffy.

“Listen… about Willow. She’s out of control. Last week she was supposed to take Dawn to the movies, but stopped off at some seedy den for a magic fix. Her actions put Dawn in danger and broke her arm. Things are bad. She can’t stop. Every little thing she does is magic, nothing is off limits. Is there a witchy rehab or something?”

He quickly dialed the number for the Devon Coven. Perhaps they would help.

Author: littleotter73

Characters: Giles/Ethan

Rating: PG

Prompt: Sting’s “Shadows in the Rain”

Disclaimer: For fun, not profit.

The rain beat down in sheets as he made his way back to his dingy tenement. He’d woken up in his clothes again in an abandoned warehouse in the Docklands, reeking of magicks, reefer, and sex, trying to remember the name of the bloke he’d spent the night with. Stephen or Nathan. Keenan perhaps. Didn’t matter, he’d bolted before he woke.

A chill went up his spine as he noticed a shadow from the street lamp off to his right and pulled the stake from inside his jacket.

“Hello, Ripper.”

His eyes lit up in recognition. “Ethan! Thank the gods!”

I was tinkering about and went with the idea of Giles getting surprised for Christmas for this prompt. I originally went gen, but the muse wasn't really happy with that and wanted something slightly shippy too, so I decided to write and post both.

Title:

Author: littleotter73

Characters: Giles, Xander, Willow, Buffy, and Dawn

Rating: FRC

Prompt: Roast

Word Count: 100

Disclaimer: Just for fun, not profit

Giles added another to log the fire. This winter just seemed colder. He missed his makeshift family, now scattered across three continents with busy schedules and lives of their own.

A knock invaded the silence and he looked up in surprise as Xander, Willow, Dawn, and Buffy stumbled through the door, stomping snow off their boots and dropping their bags in the hall.

“Merry Christmas!” they called.

He stood with his mouth agape.

Dawn held up a sack. “I remembered the chestnuts for roasting.”

“And I brought some corn for poppin’” Xander quipped.

Giles smiled widely. “Don’t mix carols, Xander.”

Giles added another log to the fire. It seemed wrong spending Christmas apart, but their schedules being what they were, the Scoobies were unable to get together until New Years.

He stared into the flames before hearing a commotion at the door and looked up to see Buffy stumble through, stomping snow off her boots and dropping her suitcase in the hall.

Her smile lit up his world and he suddenly found himself with an armful of Slayer.

Laughing he stated, “You’re a week early.”

“Well, I thought maybe we could roast some chestnuts, drink some nog.”

“Happy Christmas, Buffy.”

Prompt: Drums

Giles could hear the drums of war beating in the air. As the Scoobies poured into the conference room, Xander placed his rather large gift in the center of the table.

“Behold! My offering for this year’s White Elephant Extravaganza!” he boomed proudly as Giles placed a small package on the table. “Your puny offering is unsatisfactory, Watcher!”

“Even if it is a twenty-four hour cloaking spell?”

Xander’s eye grew wide with interest. “Is it?”

Giles shrugged, his body language neutral. Never would he admit that the box contained two tickets to the symphony he was counting on stealing back.

“A wise man once said, ‘testosterone is the great equalizer. It turns all men into morons,’ if I remember correctly,” Buffy said, her voice teasing.

“Yes, but did it have to happen so soon?”

She shrugged. “Our baby boy is growing up.”

“He’s still so young!” Giles protested.

“It’s time, Giles,” she entreated as the six month beagle puppy bounded in to the room growling and shaking a stuffed teddy bear. “And right on cue…” she laughed.

“I know,” he sighed in resignation, picking up the pup and cuddling him close. “Come on, Puck, off to the vet we go.”

“Where are you?”

Buffy looked around, flanked by tall hedges and nothing but a lane and a half wide road ahead of and behind her. Shaking her head, she huffed, “I have no idea. I followed the signs but… what is it with the road system here?”

“You have to give me something to go on if I am to bring you petrol.”

“Gas, Giles! Gas!”

“You’re in my country now, and we say petrol. PE-TROL. Say it with me,” he teased over the phone.

“Just help me figure out where I am,” she laughed. “It’s starting to snow.”

Welcome to December! This month's theme is:

Holiday Drabble Challenge

It works a bit like March Madness (last-line/first-line) in that someone will pick up the previous writer's prompt, but that prompt won't be a last line, it will just be a word or an idea the writer puts down for the next writer to pick up.

I will start Day 1 off and leave a prompt.

The wind whipped off the Thames, piercing his skin and further chilling his bones. He hugged himself tighter in his black leather jacket, his tattered, moth eaten jumper worn beneath and ripped jeans doing nothing to help insulate his already too thin frame.

Finding a phone box, he stepped inside for respite, stamping his feet and blowing air into his chapped, red hands before picking up the receiver.

"Hello?"

He hesitated at her gentle voice.

"Hello? Rupert... is that you?"

He remained silent.

"Rupert, son, come home"

Squeezing his misting eyes shut, he rang off and whispered, "Happy Christmas, Mum."

After the last of the candy had been handed out, Buffy flopped down on the sofa next to Giles.

“Thank you for staying and helping out,” he said, resting his feet on the table before them. “You didn’t have to.”

“It was fun,” she answered, placing a Hershey’s Kiss into his palm.

He looked down in surprise at the silver foil covered confection with its jaunty paper flag.

“I don’t recall having bought these.”

“You didn’t.” Glancing up at him, she blushed. “Trick or treat?”

The invitation wasn’t lost on him. “Treat,” he murmured.

She  rose up and kissed him.

“Do you really think all this refined sugar is necessary?” Buffy called from the kitchen staring in awe at the cauldron of candy Giles had put together. “I mean, honestly, how many British kids are going to come knock on your door for trick or treating?”

“I posted signs around the neighbourhood last week,” Giles assured her confidently, entering the room decked out in full Ziggy Stardust costume. The door bell rang and he picked up the cauldron, looking triumphant. “Besides, all children love sweets and dressing up.”

Buffy shook her head in amusement. “Not just the children…” she muttered.

Summary/Setting: Buffy stops by Giles’ apartment before heading to The Bronze at the end of Tabula Rasa

Rating: FRT

Word Count: 100

Prompts: Books and Tea

Disclaimer: Just playing in Joss’ sandbox.

He hadn’t lived there since the night she’d died, having first moved into her house to take care of Dawn, then back to England, and then to her couch, but she suddenly found herself at Giles’ apartment, staring at the ‘For Lease’ sign on the door.

It had been her haven, a place she’d felt welcome and cared for.

Letting herself in, she found it empty. Not one reminder that he’d lived there remained: no lingering smell of tea, not one book left behind. Giles was gone.

Her anger flared. Fuck this. She’d find welcome and refuge at The Bronze.

Title: Poles Apart

Author: littleotter73

Character: Giles

Setting: Season 6, before Two to Go

Rating: FRC
Prompt: Pink Floyd - Poles Apart

Word Count: 100

Disclaimer: Just playing in Joss’ sandbox

Staring at the phone, Giles warred with himself whether he should ring her again. It had been six months and he’d never connected with her. He’d spoken with Dawn, Tara, and Willow, and of course, he’d kept in touch with Anya about the Magic Box - and that meant that he’d also spoken with Xander.

But never with Buffy. She wouldn’t take his calls.

Hell hath no fury…

Now the situation was dire: an apocalypse was imminent and he needed to warn her of the threat Willow posed to the world.

How could he do that when they were poles apart?
