Routine is important. It's the glue that holds your day together when life goes to hell. In the aftermath of the death, the murder, of Jenny, Giles concentrated on doing the usual things, just putting one foot in front of other.

He was familiar with death; he read extensively about it in the Watchers' historical accounts. He'd seen death. Buffy had, herself, died. But then she'd come back and it wasn't even he who'd found her broken body. As he had Jenny's.

But his calling as Watcher was of primary importance, especially with the recidivist Angel on the loose. He must help his Slayer. So every morning he awoke, showered, and shaved. He may have scrubbed at his body harder than he had before. He may have stared at his reflection in the bathroom mirror for a longer minute than he used to. But then dressed and went to work.
