Title: He Didn’t Know

“Sorry about tonight Giles,” said Xander, “My shot missed”

Giles remembered his fear when he’d seen how close the vampire had been to an exhausted Xander. “You’ve nothing to apologize for.”

“But if I’d got him you would’ve been proud of me, like you are of Buffy”

Giles looked over at this remarkable boy who continually put his life on the line. “Xander, I am always proud of all of you. Sometimes, you most of all.

Xander’s mouth fell open for a moment before his face lit up in a huge grin.

“Yeah?” Suddenly he wasn’t feeling quite so tired.

Aww! I love it when Giles has tender moments with Xander, considering he spent the first couple seasons being (mostly) terribly annoyed with him. Very cute. Scooby boys bonding for the win! :)

Giles and Xander seem like such opposites, and yet they can work so well together. Sometimes I just like to put Giles with different characters and see what happens. It's always interesting. Thanks for the feedback!

Awesome. Sometimes I don't think Giles realized he was the only real man Xander had in his life to look up to. I always love the way Giles' approval would light Xander up, and this shows that perfectly. Bravo.

Nice moment between Xander and Giles. Xander's humor sometimes made it easy to overlook how hard it must have been for him being the "ordinary" one in a group that included a Slayer and a super-smart witch.

Thank you! I agree completely - I don't think Xander got enough credit for hanging around and continuing to fight the fight, so it's nice to be able to give him some in fanfic.
