He's surprised by the phone call, although he shouldn't be. He is on the flight line's preferred customer list and does have them set to call and remind him to make reservations in plenty of time to be home before Christmas Eve. Yet as he listens to the friendly representative's voice on the other end of the line, Giles can barely focus on the offers she's making.
He's too busy listening to the chatter out in the main part of the library and wanting to be with people not even half his age. He thanks the rep politely enough, declines, and hangs up. His pace quickens naturally so he can report more swiftly back to where he belongs. As he emerges from behind his desk, Buffy looks up and smiles at him. His heart immediately warms.
"So I was saying," she prattles on, waving a lollipop, "you guys should totally come hang out with us for Christmas or," she looks to Willow, "Hanukah," and to Giles, "and whatever you Brits celebrate."
Rupert pushes his glasses back up onto his nose and smiles rather bashfully. "We celebrate Christmas, thank you very much."
"You can thank me after you've tasted my Mom's ham. It's always been just the two of us since Dad left, and I think she'd really appreciate the company."
"I wouldn't want to impose."
"Duh. Are you not hearing me? We want you to impose. We practically need you guys to. I don't think I can take another holiday with Mom moping about how I'm not a little girl any more and Dad's not around all right. Come!" Willow and Xander are already quickly agreeing; Buffy's pouting gaze pinpoints Giles.
"All right," he says with a smile, "but I must insist on bringing something."
"Bring presents," Buffy instructs without hesitation, "and not just pointy wood presents but real presents. In fact, I think we should all get each other a little something."
"I think that's a neat idea," Willow says, beaming.
Their smiles and excitement are contagious, and suddenly, Giles feels quite warm in the stuffy school library despite the lack of physical heat. His smile grins as the teenagers plot their presents, and he realizes something he hadn't quite noticed before. He's already home for the holidays.
