He wasn't the man she wanted him to be. The party had been wild and reckless, but now he was alone with the prettiest girl, Ripper saw past the mixture of lust, drink and drugs in her young waxy eyes and realised she was probably no more than fifteen. God, it was a terrible thing to be a responsible adult at twenty-one, and though she flung all manner of curses at him as he grabbed his jacket and fled the room, it was still the right thing to do.
He lit a cigarette and walked home. Some rules mattered.
