"A Slayer deserves a night off now and then," Buffy argued, her lips turned down in a little pout.

Giles took an interest in the book he carried, determined to resist the emotional blackmail tactic. "I agree," he began. "However, this is the third night in a row you have asked to have off and the vampires are not going to stake themselves."

"But those were exam related... ok, so last night was a date - a study date - but Giles, we're talking Cibo Matto!"

Perplexed, he made the mistake of looking at her. Victory was hers. He'd lost his resolve.

Her eyes said it all. He tried not to dwell on it. They both knew what had to be done, knew what they wanted didn't matter in that moment. He needed to secure Willow at the coven and place her on the road to recovery and atonement. But the bond he shared with his Slayer tugged at his soul. He'd been wrong to leave. His place was by her side.

But it would have to wait.

"No matter the outcome," Buffy began, with a quick glance at Willow. "Come home."

He placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "I promise."

Giles gathered the post before crossing the threshold and tossed his keys onto the side table. Closing the door behind him, he rifled through the stack of papers, lamenting the fact that he hadn’t heard from his globetrotting Slayer yet. He’d already received greetings from the rest of the gang.

As he set down the bundle, he noticed a muted glow from the lounge and, not remembering having left a light on that morning, cautiously made his way to investigate.

Finding Buffy standing before a newly decorated tree, a smile spread across his lips.

“Merry Christmas, Giles,” she said softly.

A/N: Sorry this is a day late. I was busy volunteering with my kids' play yesterday - closing night and whatnot.

It never ceased to amaze him, the generosity of his Slayer. Despite the complexities of planning and the sheer volume of sweets and treats acquired, she was determined to follow through with the Summers family tradition of celebrating St Nicholas Day - only on a grand scale in the Slayer dorm.

“Dawn and I looked forward to this every year,” Buffy explained, smiling and placing two goody filled shoes in front of a door. “It’s the little things.”

“It’s important to carry traditions forward,” Giles agreed, shifting the large sack he carried. “Although next time, find someone else wear the robes.”

Happy holidays and much love to our wonderful mod, [livejournal.com profile] il_mio_capitano, and to my fellow Giles-shortsians! I thought I'd save words by combining prompts, and naturally ended up with a ficlet instead. Forgive me, please?

Prompts filled: #1: shopping for presents, #2: gingerbread, and sort of #4: making a list and checking it twice, with much thanks to il_mio_capitano for the wonderful prompts!
Feedback: Won't you please? I take con-crit like a pro. :)

Since peace on earth and goodwill to all non-demons would remain an unfulfilled wish here on the Hellmouth, Giles decided that he might as well celebrate Christmas by embracing the commercialism that Anya had assured him was the American way...

“Making a list?” Giles asked, walking into Buffy’s office and noticing her bent over a piece of paper.

“And checking it twice,” she quipped. “I can’t help but feel I am missing somebody… or somebodies.”

Taking the paper from her, Giles sat down on the corner of her desk and glanced over it. “Ah, you’ve missed Helen…” he said and, picking up her pen, struck out the name of another girl. “Last night, after patrol, Erin-“

“No!”

Startled, Giles looked up to see the the panic in Buffy’s eyes. “No! Nothing like that! Erin’s just gone home for the holidays.”

“I’ll watch over you,” Buffy encouraged. “You’re doing great. Just keep climbing up to me.”

Giles stopped to catch his breath and the rusty ladder groaned alarmingly as bolts screeched in protest. The smoke and heat from the cauldron below seemed inescapable.

“I’m getting too old for this, Buffy,” he gasped.

“Fine. We can talk about a retirement plan tomorrow. In the meantime, move your elderly ass up that ladder or I’m going to come down there and kick it for you.”

That was the trouble with ex-cheerleaders, he thought grudgingly as he climbed. It was always life and death.

But Buffy wasn’t amused, and that really wasn’t a surprise. She’d caught him up on his feet, fixing a drink, when he should’ve been lying in bed recuperating from his injuries.

She stood there with hands on her hips. “Are you mixing alcohol and painkillers?”

He stared at her wide eyed, bottle in hand. “I haven’t taken the drugs. They make me feel funny.”

Buffy sighed and gently took the bottle from him. “Giles, you take them to help you heal and manage the pain. This… this… doesn’t help.” She took his hand. “I’m here now. I’ll watch over you.”

"Gee, what fun this is. Tell me you're not having fun, Giles?" Buffy's sarcasm got only a scowl as they trudged through the snow. "Hey, mister, I'm not the one whose car broke down. I'm not the one who's stranded us in Narnia."

"We're in the Scottish Highlands, Buffy, and I'm not the one who said take the next left," he countered.

"It looked pretty."

"'Looking pretty' isn't considered a reliable navigational indicator. Come on. We have to find shelter before we're spotted by a bear."

Buffy was wide-eyed. "Scotland has bears?"

Giles smiled. Now he was having fun.

“What? I'm supposed to say I didn't come home because my Watcher had a dream?”

“I don't see how requiring your assistance with research constitutes a dream.”

“As in dream-on?” Buffy dumped the book on the table.

“I know! You can say you're staying overnight at my house.”

“Willow!”

“Hardly any of your books are in English, right?” Xander asked. “I'm pretty sure Buffy doesn't read ancient geek.”

“I will be reviewing the non-English materials myself.” Before Buffy could get too excited, he tapped the book on the table. “You may start with this.”

He was on his own. Again.

“Get used to it, Giles,” he muttered forlornly after closing the door behind his friends. “They all have lives outside of you and the library now.”

Crossing over to his desk, he sat down to his research, but his heart wasn’t in it and he let out a heavy sigh.

He turned hearing the door open. Buffy entered with a soft smile.

“I didn’t feel like dancing,” she answered at his questioning look. “Care to join me for a mocha at the Pump?”

The loneliness receded and he returned her smile. “I’d love to.”

Posting bail for her Watcher had not been part of Buffy's plans for Valentine's Day.

"Possession of a deadly weapon in a public place?" she remonstrated.

"Which I didn't get back, you'll notice."

"Giles, you can't crash the mall with a broadsword and expect the cops not to notice. What were you thinking?"

"Well, Anya said there was a massacre in the Hallmark store so I thought I'd better get over there."

"And was there?

He shifted uneasily. "In a manner of speaking."

"Really?"

"Absolute carnage, Buffy. Grown men weeping... The soft toy section alone was the stuff of nightmares."

Giles flexed his left hand, his fingers still stiff and sore despite weeks of physical therapy. Normally he wouldn’t acknowledge the lingering pain, but it was a constant reminder of his own failure. Angelus had done more damage than he could’ve possibly imagined in lieu of unleashing hell on earth, breaking both Watcher and Slayer.

She’d been missing for months and he was worried sick, tracking every lead. At the knock at the door, he set down his research and answered it. There she stood before him, surrounded by her friends, safe and whole. And suddenly the pain was gone.
